A Brief Australian 4A-GE History

by Andrew Hebron

Some more info for the Toy' terms etc..

TTA. Toyota Team Australia. Very successful running AE86's at national events including the Bathurst 1000klm at Mt Panorama Bathurst Australia. In fact development on the 4age was so impressive, TTA were exporting 4age's in full spec back to Japan. They were pulling 8k rpm all day for 1000k's up and down the mountain and very very rarely  blew apart.  AE86's have high reputation for body strength ( I was surprised  to see that they aren't elsewhere without cages etc) and reliability here and have seen many successes in rallying (still).

BLUE HATS. 86kw.
RED HATS. 100kw.

AE82's  used these here in Australia from 1985 until AE92.They changed the stroke for more "ballsy" as the ads say, performance. Many regard the blue hat as more responsive and revvy.
AE86's were imported to Oz by Toyota from 1983-84(first two years of AE86 production) for sale fitted with only the 4A-C...single cam, carbs. Some with air-con. Drums on the rear, and
solid discs up front. This is why so many AE86's were shipped from wrecking yards in Japan to Oz. Very healthy tuning market here. Usually brought in as front cuts. Pity that.  Blame archaic (sp) import rules for that. Rules have been relaxed and now you can find many "interesting" imports from Japan.
No Trueno were officially shipped and all have Levin style grilles, but many along with GT Levin's etc were brought in under competition import registrations...you couldn't register them for public
road use-there ways though...8-) Many club racers have dropped the 4AGZE for the 20valve head as
the super charger put them into the highest class and made them uncompetitive.

I hope you find this info useful for this really good page.

kind regards,
Andrew Hebron.
