If the problem is indeed the pickup coil and not the igniter, I believe replacing it should work.
However, I have not done that. I have just swapped out the whole thing.

Re: Distributor Pickup Coil Question
I've always said the igniter is electronic points, so that sounds pretty close. But if the coil lies to the igniter, the tach WILL freak. And the engine won't be too happy either. Over the past 5 years, 3 of my old Toyota's have had the pickup coil or igniter go bad. In every case, the tach floppine...

Distributor Pickup Coil Question
Is there a crank position sensor for the 4AGE, or does the pickup coil in the distributor do that instead?

Re: Pickup Coil
Well, about dissy coils, but not 4ag's, I just unexpectedly lost the distributor coil in my '91 Landcruiser last week.
But this was a new twist - the wires got hung around the rotor and made a big fuzzy bird's nest around the rotor.

Re: Best kit for beams swap
My 84 SR5 & 85 GTS both run beautifully.
But one has to plan for the future! The JSP kit mentions mounting either forward or backward, depending on how you like your pain. Do you know which option keeps the center of gravity closest to the original?

Re: Pickup Coil
Interesting. Thanks, I'll check. I know my 4ac pickup coil was fried with the symptom of occasional wild tach needle flopping + intermittent spark, especially warm. My buddy said he had the same issue with his 4Runner. In both cases, the problem was intermittent, so all the checks showed normal 99% ...

Pickup Coil
Both my GTS and my daughter's MR2 are starting to show signs of distributor pickup coil flakiness - occasional tachometer madness and random acts of roughness. I see on Ebay several 4AGE pickup coils, with prices from $45 to over $1000, although they all have the exact same image (i.e., I expect the...

Re: Charge Light Weirdness
Hey thanks! Based on the drawing in the MR2 Green book, I thought the L terminal was the lone (battery charging) line! So my no connectivity diagnosis is a good thing. Now I get to try the L terminal inside the plug... It's too stinking cold out there. This has to wait a few days. I'll drive the Lan...

Re: Charge Light Weirdness
The brake light must get voltage because the brake fluid sensor will fire it. If the GTS is wired like the MR2, the only other way the light can come on is by grounding through the alternator via the charge fuse. Unfortunately, I don't know how the alternator is wired to decide when to ground the L ...

Re: Charge Light Weirdness
I have the MR2 wiring diagram.
The charge fuse is good. That would have been an easy fix.
The parking brake switch isn't wired in. But the brake light does come on if the brake fluid level is low (when I pull off the lid).

Charge Light Weirdness
When I turn the key on without starting, all dash lights illuminate normally. Last week, my alternator belt broke, but I did NOT get anything on the dash - no battery light, no brake light. Almost stranded me in a rainstorm with my headlights and wipers on. Any ideas what to look for??? 1985 GTS cou...

Distributor Coil?
- My '85b MR2 has a tachometer freak out every day or so (either works perfectly or just pegs randomly with no change in RPM's).
Is this the sign of a dying distributor pick up coil? It is still running fine. But I don't want to die in a bad place.

It's back in, and I believe all is great. But I trashed my thermostat housing drain plug trying to flush the coolant. :b

Re: Shifter Fork Clip Question
Thanks. I don't think there is but one for the 1985-86 years.
Anyway, the Haynes manual had a picture and I played with it for another 30 or 40 minutes. Finally decided it must be right.
Tranny goes back in today, if all goes well.

Shifter Fork Clip Question
Picked up a very needy '86 MR2, and I'm replacing the clutch. The clip that holds the throw out bearing onto the fork seems like it should snap on more securely. The ends of the clip are inside the fork, but there seems to be no way it clips over nice and flush like it does in the box without the fo...
