Re: notnilc20's 1986 ae86 Hatch build/restoration
One suggestion on the setting up the TPS. The bottom screw attaching the TPS to the TB, can be a real PITA when it comes to access. $hit can the stock Toyota screws and go to your local hardware store, in my case Home Depot and get two Allen Socket screws. They should be 4mm - 0.7thds x 12mm lg. Li...

Here it is all in one episode. Setting timing per the Toyota factory service manual. Also, I set up the throttle body and TPS (throttle position sensor).

Re: Timing woes and tps
UPDATE!! I finally got it sorted. First off special thanks to Jondee86 for the excellent spot on info.! I set up the TB and TPS and what my main issue was....was the distributor kept turning before I could install it into place and causing me issues....even after I took the dist. Cap off and held th...

Re: Idle adjuster.... why is it blocked off?
Remove the throttlebody from the intake manifold and point it towards a light source as if you were trying to look down the throat of the throttlebody. Then open the butterfly slightly. You will see a thin crescent of light appear on the edge of the butterfly. Because of the high contrast you can e...

Measuring pinion angle and install an adjustable panhard or lateral bar then make some fine tuning adjustments to center that rear end.

Gonna be doing this tmrw probably so I just want to clarify what you mean here. What do you mean, "holding the whole thing to the light"? Thanks.

Re: Idle adjuster.... why is it blocked off?
Forgot to mention Jondee that when I take the wire out of the diagnostic plug the car dies and then if I try to start the car after that it just cranks over on and on and on and never starts.

Re: Idle adjuster.... why is it blocked off?
Can't think of any reason why the engine should die because you pull the wire out :? I would suggest that once you have set the TPS according to the details given in my post above, you test the TPS. There are specific resistance ranges that apply when you test between the pins, and you need to veri...

Re: Idle adjuster.... why is it blocked off?
I vote sticky! Such great information Jondee....Ok great.....well this gives me hope that I can get the car set at optimal timing. So if after you remove the wire from diagnostics plug the idle might increase slightly due to the fact that there will be a slight difference of 5-6 deg of timing btdc.....

It's just a rubber plug to stop people putting cigarette butts and other hard to get out rubbish down the tube (* insert your own butt plug comment here). Re: Timing woes and tps'
to check if distributor is set correctly, I like to remove the cap and look at the rotor and the sensor lobes. WIth all the timing marks set correctly and at TDC, you should be able to visually verify that the rotor is pointing at spark plug 1. Set the crank to firing position, I think 10DBTDC and ...

Re: Timing woes and tps'
I would make sure the crank is actually TDC by removing the 1st cylinder's spark plug and putting something in there like a stick or something. Once the stick reaches the highest point your at TDC. Then check the cams to make sure they line up at that point. If all that is correct then the distribu...

Re: Timing woes and tps'
Is it Fixed? Well....not really but kinda. Read below.... With all those issues, it sounds more and more like your timing belt may have jumped a tooth. How old is the belt? I would remove the front cam belt covers and verify that the cams are set correctly. You probably need to adjust belt tension ...

Beep beep is the horn fixed? Re: Timing woes and tps'
Okay here's the update. I hand-cranked the crank 2 top dead center mark and check the mark on the camshaft on the intake side through the oil filler to verify that it was set at top dead center on the compression stroke. Everything lined up good. After several attempts I was able to move the distrib...

Re: Timing woes and tps'
I ran lightweight pulleys in my old G35 for like 10 years with no issues. I also ran T3's pulley on my old 4ag motor for a couple years with no issues either. Personally, I don't know anyone who has had any issues running aftermarket pulleys that ran into excessive bearing wear at the crank. Thanks...

Re: Timing woes and tps'
water pump pulley wont line up as well since the ae86 water pump is longer. If you are still running acc you should just buy a solid crank pulley from T3 or NST, that way you don't have to mess around with machining current pulleys etc. I heard aluminum lightweight pulleys are not good for the bala...

Re: Timing woes and tps'
As aukword1 mentioned, the outer pulley ring is bonded to the center section of the crank pulley. I used my old the crank damper for another 2 yrs, and the outer ring slowly moved during that time. But it did not separate. After a couple years I replaced the damper with an alloy pulley. Note if you...

Re: Timing woes and tps'
One of my 4age's had the crank damper timing mark off by more then 20*. After setting the crank at TDC, I filed a new notch in the outer ring so the timing could be re-set correctly. I then put a paint mark across the rubber ban so I could verify that the outer ring had not moved relative to the in...

Re: Timing woes and tps'
Yes, if your cam timing is correct, you will need to carefully extract the dissy without rotating it, move the gear one tooth counter-clockwise and slide her back in again. Then just rotate the dissy to correct the timing in the normal way. Cheers... jondee86 Can think of a couple things, maybe dis...

Timing woes and tps
Okay I'll try to make this as brief as possible. Once upon a time I was having issues with my TPS so I decided to set the timing to -16 degrees without the car being in normal Diagnostics mode. The reason I did this is because I could not get the car into normal Diagnostics mode because I was gettin...
