Re: Ultimate Steering Rack for the AE86
Because this is quite an interesting topic, I did a bit of googling :) Seems the minor criticisms that I have of the early Mitsi EPS were common to a lot of the early EPS systems in different makes and models of car. Over the years there have been many improvements and additional inputs added to res...

Re: Ultimate Steering Rack for the AE86
adjustment knob won't compensate for vehicle speed as oem tho..... only simulate/supply a 'fixed' sensor value I think isn't caster responsible for on-centering ? Rack shouldn't matter as it's only a servo onto the column ?Or servo doesn't accommodate rack's effect ? Yeah... that's what I thought. ...

Re: Ultimate Steering Rack for the AE86
About 10 years ago I had a look into this conversion out of curiosity. Can't be certain of the details now, but IIRC there was a bit of an issue with getting the correct vehicle speed signal for the Yaris P/S controller. Seems the controller ramps the power assist level down as the vehicle speed inc...

Re: Ultimate Steering Rack for the AE86
Tire size has to be considered. OEM manual rack was never any problem with 185/60 tires. But I ran a set of 205/60 tires for a while and they definitely felt a lot heavier at parking lot speeds. Stock ratio rack is perfect for normal, even "spirited" road driving. The only time less turns ...

Re: Diagnostic Codes from Silvertop Light Under Dash?
the light under the dash (I believe is connected to the ECU) is coming on after several minutes driving. It's not blinking, it just comes on, and stays on. You really need to trace the wire and see where it goes. If it is spliced onto one of the wires from the ECU, which wire is it spliced onto ? I...

Re: Relays
Here is a pic of how the failsafe was wired... it just interrupted the 12V supply to the injectors. https://i.imgur.com/qn1nisk.jpg The coil wire ran to an ECU pin called the FS pin and (presumably) the ECU would remove the ground from the relay if it did not get an engine running signal within a ce...

Re: Relays
Yes it is correct with a MAP sensored engine. It is a safety measure to prevent the FP continuing to run in the event that the vehicle is involved in an accident that stalls the engine. AFM sensored engines have a switch in the AFM that serves the same purpose. https://i.imgur.com/DlMSTdw.jpg Cheers...

Re: Relays
It's been a while but if I remember correctly, I think it works like this... 1. Ignition switch puts 12V directly to the Coil, Igniter and Injectors (no fuse or relay). 2. Ignition switch puts 12v to the 7.5A IGN fuse and then to the coil of the Engine Main Relay and the coil of the EFI Main Relay ....

Re: Starter motor
All good then :) I was thinking that maybe the tacho was getting the full voltage spike from the coil negative. There is a fancy diode somewhere in the circuitry that clamps the spike voltage at 25 or 30 volts, and maybe if that wasn't dioding any more, the tacho could be getting higher voltage. But...

Re: Starter motor
Does the tacho work normally (no needle flickering) when the engine is running ?
Does the tacho signal come directly from the coil negative or from the igniter ? If
it comes from the igniter, do you have a spare igniter you can swap in for a test ?

Re: Starter motor
Yeah... never had the problem myself but I've read that the starter can be affected by heat soak and not want to crank when it gets hot. Stock starter should have a heat shield to help prevent that. OEM AE86 exhaust also has a heat shield on the 2 into1 section. If no heat shield some heat reflectiv...

Re: Harmonic Damper worth investing in?
Some good information in this video... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1BGsgIZ_Ek Just make sure you get one that will line up with the other pulleys you are using as FWD and RWD 4AGE pulleys have different offsets. Ross Racing do an AE86 two-row one that matches the OEM RWD pulley offset. Cheers.....

Re: Anyone build a 4AG 16v with the Brian Crower stroker kit?
As for your suggesting not going over 82mm, for longevity it's best. For a street engine definitely. For a race engine, where every little ounce of torque matters..... It's why I mentioned sleeving the block earlier. If money is no issue. As the OP has now made it clear that he is set on using the ...

Re: Anyone build a 4AG 16v with the Brian Crower stroker kit?
Well said…my biggest concern is how to make the engine “safer” given the bore is 83mm so have heard that thinning the block can make it more prone to cracking. Any tips on making it better? Since I have already pissed off the 7AGE advocates, I might as well piss off a few more people by giving some...

Re: Anyone build a 4AG 16v with the Brian Crower stroker kit?
It is kind of interesting, and not related to the OP's question, but since this thread is already f**ked I'm going to add my own comments :) Why is it that every time a topic about a high power 4AGE build comes up it always degenerates into a debate about 7AGE builds versus the world ?? Why does eve...

Re: Carbed 4AGE dizzy issues
Just discovered something that has always had me confused.... MSD call a VR trigger sensor a "magnetic pickup". So basically if you hook your distributor up to the magnetic pickup input on the MSD and to the coil outputs, you are good to go :) Nothing wrong with MSD and there are about 2,6...

Re: Front Windshield Question: Difference between LHD and RHD?
My bad... didn't notice that you were actually asking if there is a difference LHD to RHD. As far as I know there is no difference in the windscreen opening... any AE85/AE86 (GTS/SR5) screen should fit. The US screen does list under a different number but the cowl listing is the same as JDM. I don't...

Re: Anyone build a 4AG 16v with the Brian Crower stroker kit?
Yeah... no argument that torque is nice :) But having spent a few years driving a stock AE86 in a lot of different situations, I only ever found the lack of torque to be noticeable for overtaking in 4th and 5th gears. And to be fair, expecting a N.A. 1.6 liter Corolla to be a torque monster is askin...

Re: Anyone build a 4AG 16v with the Brian Crower stroker kit?
I'm not in the business of criticizing anyone's engine build. It's a free world (well some parts are still kind of semi-free) and when I built my 16V I just did what suited my ideas and budget. OP has put a lot of time and cash into this build and it is a solid engine, but I'm guessing that since he...

Don't go down that rabbit hole... the Brian Crower crank is a modern 4340 steel billet item made for racing, not some old school OEM crank made for a daily driver :) Journal overlap will not be an issue. Read the specs taken from the BC site... BC crankshafts are made from the finest, aerospace grad...
