It sounds like you haven't driven an AE86 with a relatively fresh 4AGE engine in it. You really should drive one and decide if you really want to go gonzo on it. The car is plenty fun with stock power or with minor mods. My 99 MIata sits in the driveway housing spiders while my Corolla is on track....

Oem retainers can be used with cams such as 304 10.5mm lift? Or are they safe enough to be revving under 9000 rpm? I've used OEM retainers with a few 10mm, or higher lift cams... I've not heard of them failing... albeit I just finished the 2nd one just last week, and it is in transit to my client. ...

I'd use that as a BASIC guide only.... Reason - in some cases these engines are now 30 years old! There have been SOOOO many of them screwed with that finding everything original can be pretty rare sometimes. It is best when dealing (understanding) these engines that you look at the major components...

Shim tool is awesome. I've been doing it the long way. Make all measurements at once, pull cams, then measure all the shims. Do the math and find closest shim and do all 16 at the same time. This works... my only issue is making sure I've done the math correctly... sometimes I add, instead of subtr...
