Re: Restoring AE86 w/ 4AGE 16v + HKS ITB + Haltech E6X

the first link has good information about setting up the ECU, but I'm not at that point yet. The information there about the trigger sensor in the distributor is about a 24-1. Would 4-1 still work? The principle is exactly the same. However, there may be some differences in how you set up the trigg...

They are the sensor wires that read the 4 tooth engine synchronization wheel. - 2 wires that plug into your factor...

Re: Restoring AE86 w/ 4AGE 16v + HKS ITB + Haltech E6X

The pickups are reluctors, and they generate a small voltage when the tooth passes the pickup. Because the voltages are very low, the wiring from the distributor should be shielded and run clear of high voltage sources to avoid electrical interference. When using the 4AGE distributor the setting of ...

could anyone tell me what the maximum advance is using the original distributor and timing marks ? The standard setting for the distributor on a stock 16V 4AGE is 10 deg BTDC and this is obtained at about mid-adjustment on a stock engine. Some simple calculations indicate that the range of adjustme...

Re: SR5 and GTS gas tank use same mounting stuff?

If you are doing a SR5>GTS conversion you need to use the
complete GTS tank, because you need the EFI fuel pump that
lives inside the GTS tank. You will also need the GTS fuel, vent
and return hard lines.

Tanks are the same size and shape, so whatever fixings you
have for holding the tank to the car will work with either one.
You will need to swap the GTS pump bracket out for the SR5
fuel pickup... drops straight in with the same gasket and screws.

If you get 160-165 across all four cylinders, then the rings can't be that bad. If you know the stem seals are bad, replace them and go with a new head gasket until you are sure what you want to do. Meantime you have had some hands-on time with the tools you need for pulling down the engine. You wil...

Re: hks cams staggered 272 intake and 288 exhaust

Using a degree wheel and DTI to check your cam timing is always a good idea if you have the equipment handy. I downloaded a degree wheel image, printed it out and stuck it to a piece of thin cardboard. That was good enough for using once or twice, and I borrowed a DTI from where I worked. A piston s...

That's just a random pic I grabbed off the interwebz. You can buy similar sandwich plates on ebay or from any speed shop or auto parts supplier. And this is the easy option... http://www.arkdesign-au.com/proimg/accessory_6.jpg ... providing you have the space to allow your oil filter to stick out another 30mm more or less. If it gets too close to your exhaust you will need to use a reflactive wrapper on the filter. Cheers... jondee86

Catastrophic rear end failure is pretty rare. Broken axles... yes. A few teeth of the pinion... yes. Bearing failures... can happen. But in most cases you only get into this situation by abusing the clutch or ignoring the obvious signs of wear and tear. Any unusual rattle, clunk, noise, vibration or...

Re: hks cams staggered 272 intake and 288 exhaust

Longer cams will have more overlap than you had with shorter cams if installed at the same timing. And most likely your intake manifold pressure at idle is now closer to atmospheric. You could try increasing the lobe separation angle to reduce the overlap, and see if that helps. Try exhaust advanced...

Re: Cold start issue/oil pressure gauge stopped working

Cold start on the video looks kind of normal. The AE86 has old skool EFI, and does not have a lot of smarts as far as cold starts are concerned. The cold start injector is a substitute for pumping the gas pedal to prime the engine, and the cold temp enrichment together with the thermostatic idle-up ...

Re: Restoring AE86 w/ 4AGE 16v + HKS ITB + Haltech E6X

You said I could use the distributor and not use EDIS. I shall elaborate. The EDIS system was widely used on various Ford vehicles in 4, 6 and 8 cylinder versions. It used a sensor reading a toothed wheel on the crankshaft, to control a wasted spark coil pack. No distributor was required, so if you...

Man!!! I love a mystery :) My guess is the rings gave up the fight (has the engine done 350,000 miles ?) and you got a heap of blowby. That pushed oil and fumes out the cam cover vent and into the intake manifold, where it got sucked back into the engine and burned. Compression would have been low, ...
