1989 GTS restoration
1989 GTS restoration
I have a 1989 toyota corolla GTS. Unfortunately I got into a crash, and i was wondering if you guys could help me determine the best approach to this. I found my same car and i was thinking about parting it out to fix mine. I live in Hawaii so shipping parts is costly. The drivers door is destroyed as well as the rocker panels. The rear left wheel is bent inward due to the lower control arm being bent, and the front left fender needs to be replaced. Any advice?
Re: 1989 GTS restoration
In my mind I'd be keeping an eye out for another one that has a good base body but trashed engine and/or interior that someone is getting rid of cheap. In my opnion these cars aren't really worth the money and effort to try and fix that amount of damage. I had a FX16 that was in pretty good shape that got side swiped parked on the street. I ended up finding another FX16 and buying that. Pretty amazing considering they were never brought into Hawaii. You can try and scour the junkyards for parts, but they don't keep cars of these vintage for very long. Once again, that same FX that was sideswiped just a few weeks prior had its passenger door back into by a dodge ram, and miracles of miracles I found a FX16 in local junkyard that that one door was the only part not rusted! So that FX was cursed, blessed, then cursed again. I never got around to replacing the door as it was a couple weeks after finding that door that it was sideswiped.
It helps to have aquantances who are into cars that check out the yards as that was how I was alerted that there was a FX16 in that yard. I was know to be the guy who has all the FX16's.

I would also say to try finding a good body coupe (even an SR5, if it's a 90-91 = fuel injected) to swap over the good bits from yours. But if the rear control arm is damaged, you may have to find another GT-S for the upgraded rear suspension.
About that interior... how uncommon is the maroon interior for a coupe? I thought grey was more common.

I have yet to see another maroon interior 1989 GTS, and while it may be a little harder to find it does take some getting used to. Older corollas are hard to come by here in Hawaii, and in terms of the parts I am not even sure if it is the control arm but it is the bar on the rear left towards the front of the car. There are two per corner. do you know if i am correct about calling it a control arm???

I'm not sure on the name as I don't have the rear suspension of an AE92 on my wagon (the AE95 rear is like the AE86). Maybe it's called a trailing arm?

Yup I think its called the trailing arm.
I feel your pain, try finding a FX16 in Hawaii! Although I remember coming across a few AE92s when I was scouring the yard for CV shafts and rear struts to use.
