Removing 4ag 16v Head

Postby bong_ae86 » Fri Feb 02, 2018 11:27 am

Will be removing the head soon to replace a head gasket. Oil is leaking underneath the dizzy clearly coming from the gasket. Between the dizzy and head gasket it is clean and dry. from what i seen on the FSM the oil passage going to the head is right there as well. Anyways, I'm putting a "shopping list" together and would like some opinions. I've always planned for tomei 264 poncams but always read i should replace valves springs so now would be a good time to do that.

Items on my list are:

-TRD .8mm Metal Head Gasket
-Supertech Valve Stem Seals
-ARP Head Studs
-Tomei 264 8.15mm
-HKS valve springs
-HKS Adjustable Cam Gears

looking for feedback or ideas if maybe its too much? am i missing something?. Not planning to go crazy with a build just something mild and a little more kick. Overall streetable. Might be worth noting i have a 4.77 R&P already and I'm very happy with the difference that has made.

Looks like you have all the big items covered. Depending on how long it has
been since the head was off last, you will need a few gaskets. Might be worth
buying a top end overhaul gasket set. It should contain everything you need
plus a composite head gasket that you won't use. You can sell that. Anyway,
these are the bits I can think of right now...

2 x Cam seals
2 x Can cover gaskets
8 x seal washers (for under the cam cover nuts)
1 x O-ring for the dissy
1 x intake manifold gasket
1 x TVIS manifold gasket (if you have the TVIS plate)
1 x exhaust manifold gasket

If you buy a kit it will have gaskets for the water outlets and probably a set
of valve stem seals as well, plus O-rings for the bypass tube and maybe for the
fuel injectors.

Since you will need to check and most likely adjust some shims to get the valve
clearances in spec, have feeler gauges, spare shims, digital calipers, pen, paper
and a can of patience handy :)

Cheers... jondee86

good point, its would be worth it to get a kit as well. are shims still available at the dealer? do you know of a kit with various sizes?

I do not think you could justify the cost of a shim kit for one set of cams. You can typically get new shims from a Toyota dealer in just one or two days. If there is a problem in Germany, there are several motorcycles that use the same size shim. You will probably only need a couple new shims for each cam. Odds are that you can re-arrange the currents shims in the engine while setting up the new cams. I found that it is a lot easier to set up new cam shim clearances while the head is off the block on the work bench. No big deal to remove the cams to re-install the head. I would also suggest that while replacing the head gasket you replace the cam belt (milage?) and add small tube of assembly lube to your list if it does not come with the new cams. Dave W7

my timing belt still fairly new. Im actually relocating to Nebraska in a couple weeks so this is a shopping list of parts still. Assembly lube along with any tools like a valve spring compressor i know I'm gonna get. I don't mind spending some extra on tools that will make the job a lot easier. So wait till i get cams in and measure for what i need and see what i can move around? Any idea what motorcycle to look at if i need to shop for shims? Yamaha since they built the head?

all pretty much looks good so far.

Use the FSM, follow the loosening pattern, and tightening pattern in the FSM.
