KP Starlet 4age build

Postby PDB » Mon Dec 01, 2014 9:40 am

Been using the site loads for references, thought it was about time I joined up and posted.

I bought my 1984 Starlet on whim, just stumbled across it whilst at a body shop looking at my mates MK2 Cortina. The Starlet was rotten in all the usual spots but mostly all there. Mechanics were all stock 1ltr 4 speed with 125k on the clocks.

The next few months were spent completely stripping the car apart, welding it all up again and a bare metal re-spray.

Loads more pictures here http://s66.photobucket.com/user/avalaug ... %20Starlet

1000's of pounds and countless hours have gone into it so far, all new suspension, brakes, custom body work, custom suspension mounts all original glass, lenses, seals, interior the list is endless. Its currently running a 1200cc 3K engine with 5 speed gearbox soon to be replaced with a 4age and T50 gearbox.

The 4age ive spent a lot of time on, bottom end all stock but refreshed, cylinder head has been heavily worked on by myself and has TOMEI Poncam camshafts, TRD valve springs with a TRD 0.5mm metal headgasket.

It's up and running, currently trying to kill the 3k but it's a tough little bugger lol

Won't have the 4age sorted until the new year unfortunately.

Still a long way to go before it's up and running again, didn't quite realise the amount of modifications required to get the engine in, and running

Wow that car was in really rough shape when you got it. Very nice body work, it cleaned up really well.

I'm just curious, why did you decide to put carbs on the 4A-GE?

The sound of the carbs is great, have always been into bikes so thought if combine the 2.

It's now up and running, still fine tuning the engine, it's also booked in for a rolling road set up to get the cams etc all dialled in.

Trackday at Brandshatch is booked for 27th Feb.

Is that the CX racing highrise header? Did it fit in there without hitting the firewall? If so are you using the stock motor mounts or the ones that lower the engine?

Using technotoytuning engine mounts, clears the firewall fine, the manifold is made by a guy in Ireland.

Just stock bottom end, in hind site I should if done the bottom end properly, but at the time it was just going to be a quick fix. Maybe when it blows I'll do it all again but go for some real power.

Started some work on a graphics package today, looking great, I'm thinking less is more on this build !

Also customised a tailgate badge

Want it to look original so tried to keep the old worn look going on it

Little update

Embarrassingly I attempted a little doughnut, but the open diff, short wheelbase, sticky tyres and grippy Tarmac ended up driving in circles lol sounds epic though :)

Lots more plans new, going to turbo charge another engine to go in it :)

A little update
ImageImageImageImage

Well parts gathering for the turbo build is going well.

I have a complete, healthy low mileage 4AGZE engine which I'm going to strip clean, and pop in some new shells and rings. Will be putting the poncams in from the current engine too and porting the head again.

Also got a RWD intake manifold and throttle body.

Have bought a turbo and header from a member on here too
ImageImageImageImage

Can anyone advise me if the 4AGZE injectors will be up to the job of about 250bhp ? If not what injectors will be suitable.

Planning on running poncams with stock internals with uprated valve springs only. Will most likely end up just using a genuine Toyota head set too.

I know the best way to make power is to lower the compression but I'm also wanting the mega boost noises so that's why was thinking to stick with stock pistons
