Oil Temp sensor mounting??

Postby shagymc » Tue Jan 27, 2015 6:39 pm

I've done a little searching and am getting mixed feedback on where to mount this thing. I have a BT 20V and just ordered an Innovate Motorsports oil pressure/temp gauge that comes with the sensor. From what I'm reading, I should either get a sandwich plate for the filter or drill and tap the sump. Looking for feedback.... I'm leaning towards the the sandwich plate for ease of install. Also, if sandwich place is better, any suggestions on brand?

Personally, I'd mount the temp. sensor in the pan, and the pressure sensor in place of the stock sensor. I'm sure others will disagree.

They make oil pan drain plug adapters, basically a drain plug with a threaded hole through the center. Also, a machine shop could probably make one out of a stock plug for a reasonable price.

And this is the easy option...

... providing you have the space to allow your oil filter to stick
out another 30mm more or less. If it gets too close to your exhaust
you will need to use a reflactive wrapper on the filter.

I'll take a look tomorrow. Does that say 'ARK' on the side jondee? I have fiberglass wrap for the headers, will that be enough or is it a trial and error type thing?

That's just a random pic I grabbed off the interwebz. You can buy
similar sandwich plates on ebay or from any speed shop or auto
parts supplier. Just make sure that it has two inlets with the right
thread for your sensors, and the holes are far enough apart that
you can fit both sensors without them hitting each other.

Having the filter real close to a hot exhaust pipe is not a great
idea, as the heat will tend to raise the oil temp. Header wrap
should be all you need. Being able to spin the filter on and off is
important, so check your header clearance before investing ;)

I use a Blitz sandwich adapter (similar to what jondee posted) Works fine for me. Plus it's mounting surface is larger, so I can now use the larger diameter filters, which is nice.

On a 4A-GE because of the location under the header (exhaust manifold) it is best to buy a relocation kit so that both filter, sensor plate/block, are out in a more accessible area for the sake of more accurate reading, as well as ease of oil filter changes, and sensor wire protection. Also a oil cooler line block can also stack on these so that everything is still easy access and have an in-line oil cooler as well.

So those are another engine and application but you get the point... They are usually made from pieces and a shop can put together various parts needed for a AE86 and 4A-GE applicaiton.

This is what the oil pan drain plug adapter looks like:
Image

They're only $16 http://shopgreddy.com/16400713.html . Fyi, sensor thread is 1/8 pt so it's metric. However, there's probably others available online.

It doesn't get cheaper/easier than that. Even if you had a machine shop modify a stock plug it would probably only cost $20.

Thanks for the info, You've given me some things to think about.
I am definitely going to just replace the stock pressure sensor with the aftermarket one. I like the idea of getting a relocation kit for the filter but the plug is definitely the easiest choice for oil temp. I read somewhere that you may get some errors with the sensor in the drain plug though. Logically thinking, I don't understand that unless the temperature change is affecting the resistance of the wires going to the gauge but I think that that would be minimal. I am probably going to go the drain plug route until I figure out if I want a relocation kit. Thanks for all the feedback again!

Maybe air moving over it since it's sticking off the bottom of the pan? Seems negligible, but just a guess.

I think m12 x 1.25 but I'm not certain.

12 x 1.25 in this part of the world :)

I ordered the M12, Thanks! I will tell you this, whoever is in charge of shipping at greddy is an asshole because it costs 16.52 to ship it!! That's effing ridiculous for a bolt! It costs more to ship it then it does to buy the bolt. Unbelievable....

In the interest of not spreading hate, I contacted Greddy about the shipping and they actually discounted it to 21 and change shipped and had it to me in 3 days. The problem is when it showed up, the temp sensor I had didn't fit in it, so I contacted Matrix garage and they set me up with a sandwich plate that excepts both temp and pressure sensors for a very reasonable price and shipping was fast as well.

The thread on your sensor is probably sae (1/8" npt), while greddy is metric (1/8" pt aka bspt).

I ended up ordering one too. I've actually been periodically checking their m12 x 1.25 item for about a year and it's always been out of stock. This thread reminded me to check back and they happened to have it in stock for a change.

Anyway, when i was placing the order online one of the many shipping options indicated $0 (basic), which I selected. My order was confirmed for a total of $16 which is the cost of the adapter. A few hours later I received an email stating I owed an extra $11.XX for shipping. It was very misleading and let them know that I wasn't happy, but they wouldn't honor the original transaction and ship it for free. At least they worked with me and drop the shipping cost down to $5.XX, but they stated it wouldn't be insured. Oddly, the item showed up in a small usps flate rate box (all of their flat rate boxes include $50 of insurance). Not a good way to do business imo.
