Fitting 15x9.5j - 19, 15x10j -25 Watanabe on AE86

Postby hachiroku » Sun Feb 10, 2013 6:28 pm

Hi Club4AG,

I pulled the trigger on a set of RS Watanabe Type R:

15x9.5j - 19 on 205/50/15
15x10j -25 on 215/50/15

Pretty set on the tire size (as they came with the wheels), and I'm kind of timid about putting a 205 tire on a 10" wheel. (but hey, I might do it anyway) I'm performance oriented, but I have to say the Yamashita/Run Free 86's are ultimate style icons to me and I want to emulate the same kind of style and aesthetic. The car has plenty of power to break the 215's loose..

I'm trying to avoid putting flares on the car but don't know how feasible it is as in the rear I'll be installing a Supra rear end, making it an effective 15x10 -32 (I think). The fronts can be massaged to work with the metal fenders but it looks like the rears might be more difficult. Anyone stretch/pull their stock metal rear quarters enough to make such wide wheels to fit? I have some Jubiride copy fender flares in case I really mess up, but I'd like to see if someone who doesn't have a background in shaping metal (moi) can make these wheels fit with mere mm to spare.

Point me please!

Not going to fit in the rear buddy your going to need flares... Ive rolled my fenders pretty much to max to fit a 15x9 0 offset and the tires clear (195) but the rim edge is still about 1/4 past the fender edge...

175/50r15? are you sure you didn't mean 195/50r15?

to the OP: with that wheel size and 205 tires, you'll need flares for sure.

15x9 -15 Fits stock rear arches. Of course, you'll need to pull the crap out of them, but onelungderryl has them fitted with a 195/50/15. For a x10 in the back, pretty sure you'll need overfender/flare though.

Hey, man. This is 15x10 0ET off an Aussie car.
I guess it should give you some idea?
It probably would stick out a good bit.

I decided after buying flares to copy the profile of the Jubride flares and make metal ones with my own style added to it. Here's how it is so far.

It was actually not as hard as I imagined it to be. What made it easier was tracing an existing flare set on some 22 gauge sheetmetal, cutting and grinding and then welding to the stock body location where the OEM flare would start (obviously cut the old fender guards where needed). Lots more grinding, sanding, puttying and then painting to go.

Thats gonna turn out great hachiroku!

I too had taken that route & did my own chop/fab job to my rears couple yrs ago. I had to cut long slits to the inner rear wells & hammered it upwards, stitch welded it back together to a new outer lip. It was an involving process for me to getting it all straight, bodyworking then paint.. i really wished i had taken pics of this diy.

Right now it clears my work equip 01's 15x10-28 with a 225/50-15 tire (my street set), & it only rubs when i carry passengers, so i maybe looking into getting a set of rear flares, much like what skizzups runnin on his own car.

Hey man, try a 215 tire. I know it's a bit of a stretch but it works out well on my setup.

hachi,
That looks great.
Do you still have that pattern traced out? Or did you only transfer it onto sheetmetal?
I'd love to make my own flares out fo steel, stronger and looks so much better.

I traced out a copy of a rear Jubiride flare and somewhat used it as a rough outline. brought out the angle grinder and went to town.

Here's how it is right now. I trimmed a little bit more of the arch for clearance and added a slightly elongated arch to let tire smoke vent outside of the wheel well to the back of the car. My buddy calls it "scalloped". Whatever, it's cool! Also mounted the kouki rear bumper, trimmed the tabs in the corners a bit and played some more with fitment.

Now onto the front fenders!

How much of the actual fender did you remove?
Thanks

Yes I'm on 175/50 on a 9j. I've posted pictures here before but its not letting now. I can email you pictures if you like to see them. Just a little inner fender lip roll in the rear but other than that its stock body.
