Radio wiring help....

Postby notnilc20 » Tue Jul 03, 2018 3:57 pm

My issue is my wiring harness for the radio and speakers were all hacked up and no OEM harnesses our present. Now I've done all my testing I found the constant 12 volt ignition 12 volt all my speaker wires eight of them and my ground wire which is the white wire with black stripe and also however there is one more wire green with red tabs on it and was wondering if anyone knows what that wire does? Thanks. Here is a pic of the wire amongst the rest of the birds nest...it's the green wire next to the white w/ blk wire.....thoughts? Thanks.

Would something like this help? A "reverse" radio harness, I had to get one for one car I'm working on. Someone hacked up the radio harness and I didn't want to worry about what wire was what.

Thanks for the reply...that looks like someth8ng I could use if I had the factory harness available. I'm no wiring expert though.

Update:
I hooked up all the speaker wires and power wires and only the blue wire from the aftermarket radio harness is left along with the mysterious green wire with red dashes....i suppose I can connect them and hope nothing blows...i can't find anything in the ewd about this wire. But maybe it will be like a dimmer for the stereo face lighting for when I turn my headlights on at night?

Hey dude,

Been there done that. I ended up actually using the reverse harness like home boy suggested, (I think that exact model).

But you gotta have the wiring diagram! It's just gonna be a huge headache without one. Even with one, it can be tough, as getting a free service manual might be zenki while you have kouki, etc. etc. But for the most part Toyota is much better about not changing wiring colors so much within a generation of a car (unlike Mazda).

I can't remember which diagram I used, but I'm pretty sure I found one online. Just look at the diagram and look at the wires in the radio area..

If you have any general questions I can definitely help out.. I'm pretty good with that stuff. But you gots to get the EWD bro! :)

Here it is. Sorry it's blurry...the only wires of mine that match with this diagram are the rear speakers. Because i'm guessing there was another harness connector that had the wires like the diagram shows for the front speakers and power wires....

The blue wire from the radio is a power antenna and/or amp turn on wire. It sends 12v out whenever the radio is on. I would not just randomly connect that to any wire unless you know what it does. I personally would cap both of those wires if the radio fires up fine without any issue with them disconnected. If you have an aftermarket power antenna (the kind that goes up and down with a motor), it'll need power from that blue wire. I can check my chiltons when I get home tomorrow.

That sounds familiar about the blue wire on the stereo harness. It's been a while since I messed with my wagon's stereo, but I seem to recall using a wire off the stereo to tell an amp to turn on.

About the reverse harness, I think for some of those the wires will be labeled with text like "right front" etc. Or that could be the adapter type of harness that I'm thinking of, the more commonly found harness like Walmart stores carry in the auto section by the stereos.

Pretty sure that the grren wire will be a dash light/park light feed,
used to light up the radio at nogth so you can see the buttons on the factory radio.

Not many aftermarket radio's use this wire.

Easy to check, turn on the lights and see if you get power on that wire.

Oh I see....thanks for the reply. So since the aftermarket unit is lit up all the time I guess I dont really need to wire the green wire up. It's already sealed up so i'll test it next time i have it apart....wonder if maybe it could also dim the light....at night you don't need the light so bright on the unit.
