Hi, Was wondering if anybody has an idea on how to get more gear ratio for lower highway cruising rpm....(not the bigger front tire idea) I have an 87 FX-16, manual trans. I know this 4AG can handle more rear gear, but it's geared for crawling along at 55 mph back in the 80's..... Thanks

swap the final drive gear for something smaller. I don't know what final drive gear size they had but on the AE86 it has a 4.3 stock. You can go with something around 4.1 or even smaller. You will sacrifice torque by doing this though.

Yeah I'm with Aukword. I think your best bet would be finding a smaller final drive. Surely there's an option out there for the fwd/mr2 guys out there. I know all the b-series honda dudes would swap the 5th gear out of LS integras since they're longer, but idk what thats like for the fwd 4age guys.

...wrong forum section? ;)

Doesn't the FX16 come with a C series FWD trans? What about a Blacktop 6 speed? I don't know anything about the C series, like the gearing for that 6 speed. Just throwing that out there.

you could start here...

Remember... wiki can be wrong... so any info should be corroborated

You could source a transaxle from a 4AC Corolla, they were geared taller. It kind of takes the fun out of the 4AGE though, the 4AGE isn't a torque monster and it dogs down low. I had to use a 4AC transaxle for a while as I rebuilt my FX16 one and it wasn't as fun.
