Been having a problem in getting a bypass valve to work on my setup. After messing
around with a Bosch valve and then the GFB 9301 valve, I have discovered that neither
of them will work. They are designed for turbo or centrifugal s/c applications, not for
a positive displacement s/c where the throttle is before the s/c.

There are other types of bypass valve that will work, but none of them are easy to fit
with my layout which already has the spigots welded on for the Bosch valve. So to cut a
long story short, I figured a way to use the GFB valve :)

I took the vacuum tank and solenoid from a TVIS engine and plumbed it up to manifold
pressure and the GFB valve. The solenoid valve allows either vacuum or boost to act on
the GFB valve, depending on whether the solenoid is energised or not.

I have programmed my ECU to switch the solenoid valve at a certain MAP reading. So
the GFB valve is open below that reading to reduce inlet temps at cruise, but closed
above to avoid any loss of boost. Backyard engineering at its best... works great :D

EDIT: Bit of an update on this mod for the tech heads :) After a few weeks of running
with this setup I discovered a flaw. When cruising and using a little bit of boost now and
then, but never actually coming right off the throttle, the valve would not open when the
MAP dropped below my switching setpoint. The vacuum tank only held enough vacuum
for one actuation... after that it needed to be recharged by seeing overrun vacuum.

However, I had recently discovered that with my setup (throttle before s/c) the vacuum
before the s/c was stronger than the vacuum after the s/c. So by way of an experiment
I changed the plumbing to put vacuum from before the s/c on the vacuum tank. Seems to
have worked, as now I can feel that little nudge of acceleration each time the valve opens
when MAP rises past my switching point. Vacuum recharge on the fly 8-)

Used my street tires for the day as I discovered that my "race rubber" that came with
the Enkei wheels must have been handed down from father to son !!! Eleven years old
according to the markings which accounts for the fact that they didn't have much grip :)
But I took a couple with me just in case of punctures. Might have to spring for some
new rubber if I decide to keep doing these events for another year.

When I bought my s/c it was supplied with fill and drain plugs, but did not have
a dipstick or sightglass for checking the oil level. The factory kitset s/c's have these
as the factory knows how the s/c will be mounted and can put the dipstick in the
correct place on the s/c. Not a biggie as I can use a ziptie for a dipstick :)

But having worked for a business that sold industrial gearboxes, I did wonder why
the s/c gearcase had no provision for venting. When the gearcase heats up under
load, the air inside expands and creates pressure which can lead to oil being forced
out thru the shaft seals. Then I read about a company making a breather kit to fit
the same s/c that is used in BZR/86 kits, and decided I should have a filter/breather.

These are available in most countries, but apparently unobtainable in NZ... one of
the penalties for being at the bottom of the world. So I made my own...

Found an M12 x 1.5 to 1/8" BSP adapter and a 1/8" bsp sintered bronze compressed
air silencer (used on control valve exhaust ports). Whittled down a piece of plastic
to make a "pellet" just big enough to fit inside the adapter without falling thru, and
held in place by the filter. Used the smallest drill I have (<1mm) to make a hole in
the pellet and plugged it into the gearcase in place of a fill plug.

Seems to work as no sign of oil coming out. :)

Had a look around to see what was available in a decent trackday tire that I could
drive to the event on and compete with, to avoid the hassle of carrying another set
of wheels. Not much choice when it comes to 14's so I decided on a set of these...

Direzza Z2 185/60-14 as I run 6" wide wheels and 185's seem to work OK at my modest
power level. When they turned up for fitting they looked a little skinny, and yes, the
tread width is less than the section width. Made them look skinny when compared to
the 888's that have a tread width about the same as the section width. Can't see it
being a problem as fresh rubber is always going to grip better than 11 year old rubber :)

Got an event coming up next weekend so will see how they work.

That's why I always go 15s. The modest increase of the wheel weight is nothing compared to the amazing selection that reveals itself to you when you bump up an inch from 14.

I remember scouring through tirerack and the internet for decent 14s on my Mazda Familia. I just gave up and never bothered going back to 14s. The market just doesn't care..

Appreciate the comments :) This is grassroots motorsport... guys building cars in
the backyard in their spare time and then bringing them out to have some fun in a
safe environment. Of course there is a full spectrum from high performance road
cars to Euro classics and every kind of modified Jap road, rally or drift car.

You don't need to have a high dollar vehicle to take part. So long as your car meets
the basic safety standards, you are in !!! I enjoy having a day out to talk cars and
see what other guys are driving. Car clubs are a great way to get into motorsport
and meet people who are as passionate about their cars as you are about yours :)

Got some TT132 lower control arms to go in the car. They are a little bit longer than
the factory AE86 lower arms and I'm hoping for an extra one degree of negative camber.
That should take me to 1.5deg negative which (IMO) is about ideal for a road car.

Fitted new TRD rubber bushings and new ball joints while I was in there, as I don't know
if the original ones had ever been changed.

Lot of dicking around to get these installed. But they are all done now and toe-in
set in my garage. Went for a drive to pick up some grease and car handled perfect
on the highway. It is such a small increase in camber that I didn't expect it to really
feel any different.

The test will come in a couple of days when I have an event that has chicanes to
keep speeds down, so plenty of opportunities to see if it turns in any better. No
idea what the caster is just now, but the steering does not feel any heavier, so it
probably hasn't changed much from stock.

Ahhh... the upload on the second video stalled, and somehow it got switched to
private instead of public. Should be working now. That uphill was shaping up to be
my fastest run of the day until I hit 5th instead of 3rd :oops: :oops:

Can't say I noticed any difference from the slightly longer LCA's. Car was drifting
sideways a bit on the corners and uphill is not a good test. In the past I have found
downhill and braking into corners is a better test of turn in, so I reserve judgement
until I have done some driving on my usual test track :)

EDIT: Car definitely turns in better now. Not a night and day difference, but enough
to make me a little more confident that the car will stick when hitting tight bends
with a bit of speed on. Can't see any downside to this mod.

Bit hard to tell from the drivers seat but I think that my exhaust resonator has lost
its acoustic packing. The car seems a bit loud and the tone has changed, so need
get that looked at and replaced. Always something standing waiting with its hand
out for cash !!!

Ever since I have had this car I have had a problem with bad reflection from the
dash pad onto the windscreen when driving into the sun. Sometimes it was so bad
I had to slow to a crawl as I just couldn't see if there were parked vehicles when
the side of the road was in shade from a fenceline or hedge.

This is a problem that is made worse if the dash pad has been treated with a vinyl
preservative, and mine had been. So I was looking to see what could be done to
improve the situation. Rally guys usually get the dash pad flocked, but I couldn't face
the hassle of removing the dash pad, and I only really needed to kill the reflection
off the hood above the instrument panel. So a DIY hack was needed :)

I bought a square of 1mm black wool felt and trimmed it to the shape of the hood.
Then I used a "sticky jelly pad" cut in half to hold the edges and stop the felt sliding
around. Now, I can see the relection of the jelly pads as they are quite shiney, but
the critical vision area area to the front is virtually reflection free.

After driving the car for a few months I have discovered an annoying defect with
my cunningly modified bypass valve (see post up the page a bit). To work correctly
the small vacuum reservoir needs to be charged with the level of vacuum that only
happens on high rpm overrun. Normal idle vacuum is not enough to make it work.

Basically, this means I have to be using off-throttle engine braking in lower gears
around town to make sure that the bypass valve opens when I sit idling at the lights.
If it doesn't open, the car will idle high and this gets old quite quickly. So I have done
a lot of research and discovered that there is a simple vacuum operated bypass valve
that will work with my setup. It is a double chamber diaphragm valve with vacuum
or pressure on top of the diaphragm and atmospheric pressure under the diaphragm.

This design is usually only found in large high end bypass or blowoff valves, but
I deiscovered that several JDM car manufacturers use this type of valve as the OEM
fitting on turbocharged engines. One of them is Subaru, and I grabbed one off an
old legacy wagon at my local Pick & Pull...

Early versions of the valve had an internal boost pressure port as shown in the
above diagram. But later versions did not drill out the port and replaced it with
an atmospheric vent. I believe that this later model valve (with no blowoff function)
will work perfectly for me... all I have to do is modify it so that it will fit into the
same layout as the existing GFB valve :)

Didn't take much... some nip and tuck, JB Weld a bit of 25mm tube to the input side,
add a 28 x 25 silicone reducer for the output side and it plugged right in :)

Got enough clearance and makes a much tidier installation. Also it is now a fully
mechanical system so no chance of any electrical or ECU problems affecting operation.
If it ever stops raining here I will go for a drive and see if it works as expected.

Transport regulations here in NZ say that any RWD car that has been powered
up by the addition of a turbo or supercharger must be fitted with driveshaft hoops.
So I have been busy measuring and fabricating. These have to bolt thru the floor
as there is no other practical way to fix them to the car.

Hope my measuring was up to the task and they fit as I planned. Modified road cars
have to pass an engineers inspection to ensure that the work carried out is done to a
acceptable standard, and that all modifications are safe. These hoops are one of the
items I needed to get done to pass the inspection and be "legal" on the road.

The regs that apply to modified road cars are different from those that apply to
competition cars. For modified road cars to be legally used on the streets they must
obtain a Warrant of Fitness (WOF) by passing a six-monthly standardised inspection.
The WOF test is mandatory for all road cars modified or not. But once a road car is
modified beyond certain specified limits, it must first obtain Low Volume Vehicle (LVV)
Certificate before it can obtain the WOF sticker.

One of the specified limits is when the engine rated power is increased by more than
50% (not 25% as previously stated... my bad) OR if it is fitted with a turbo or s/c
regardless of power output. This is because once the engine is boosted there is a very
good likelyhood that someone is going to up the boost at a later date :)

Using any car on the road without a WOF is a traffic offence, and sufficient reason
for your insurance company to invalidate your policy if you are involved in an accident.
Use of a scatter shield is not mandated under LVV regs, but is down to the preference
of the car owner/driver, car builder and the intended use for the car.

Discovered a valid reason for changing to COP's. I have been experiencing some
"spark blowing out" misfiring at WOT and high rpm's with the GZE coilpacks that
I have been using. After doing a bit of research I find that pencil coils are claimed
to have a stronger spark, so I bought some used 1NZ coils and ordered up a MRP
COP plate...

Beautifully made piece of kit and black anodised for that "factory look" :) I'll be
making up a new wiring harness for these with new clips to minimise joins in the
wiring, but I have to wait a few days for a new crimping tool to arrive. The COP
plate does not work with supercharger cam covers, so I will be reverting to a set
of smallport covers when installing the COP's
