What kind of LSD unit should I buy?

Hey guys, I recently bought a 85 gts hatch, but it does't come with the LSD rear end.
So I am planning to put a LSD unit in it, aftermarket or oem..

But I am not going to spend a fortune on it,
so I just want to know what you guys would choose to buy?

I know obx makes a pretty cheap one but I think they only make for Koukis...

I have done some research, Cusco and Kaaz are about 800-1100, and Tomei is about 700ish.. also found a used oem one in ebay for 199 plus shipping but it takes months to ship to the US from Japan.

I just want to know what would you guys choose, or what other options do I have?

Jack up the rear of the car so both tires are off the ground. Rotate one tire and check to see that the other tire rotates in the opposite direction. If they rotate opposite you have an LSD.

If not, then look for a used one and rebuild it for firmer lock up. It is your $$$ & ultimately your decision.

Good luck.

And look on the fire wall, driver side, and look for T283.

I have not jacked up the car and spined the wheels but I have looked on the firewall so I am pretty sure it dosen't have a lsd

For everyday road use I would go OEM or for track use it would be TRD

I agree.

Speaking from experience the aftermarket lsd units can be obnoxiously noisy at first and are very aggressive. It's a bit intense and overkill for street use.

opposite direction = LSD?! i think you're backward...

Oem ones are very hard to find and they discontiune the TRD one for Zenki long ago...

But is there any 'Stock' GTS without a LSD? I have yet to hear of one.

*i just checked on line. So my LSD WORN out because both tires move in opposite directions.

Anyone rebuild their own?

If you're patient used oem lsd units can sometimes be found in the classified section for a reasonable price. Weir performance sells a rebuild kit that increases the number of clutch plates for better lockup than stock.

I forgot about the trd units being discontinued. It's a shame because they were a pretty good deal when available. Tomei, Cusco, and OS Giken make quality units but they're expensive and I wouldn't recommend them for a street car. Fwiw I have a cusco lsd and kind of wish I just stuck with the stock unit and had that rebuilt.

There are GTSs that don't come with LSD from factory.

Im selling a freshly rebuilt Kouki (86-87) GTS LSD with brand new toyota parts (gears, ring & pinion,) Weir performance crush sleeve, new inner & outer wheel bearings, new slotted rotors.

NO !! When the back of the car is off the ground and you turn the
wheel, there is not enough load to clamp the plates. So the diff will act just
like an open diff. But if you give the wheel a decent heave (in the forward
direction)to get it moving, the inertia of the other wheel will be enough to
cause the ramps to work and clamp the plates. Then the other wheel will
move forward as well.

You have to remember that a worn OEM LSD has lost any pre-load that it
had when new, and now relies entirely on the wedging action of the cams
to clamp the plates.

I started with a TRD 2-way and replaced it with a Tomei T-Traxx. For grip usage (I really don't intentionally drift) the Tomei is a vastly better diff. It was immediately obvious that the car turned much better with the Tomei, as compared to the TRD. The TRD may have been the best thing 30 years ago when the car was new, but there are much better diffs out there now. Since you mentioned the OBX, it is a helical diff (all gears.) The most widely known diff of this type is Torsen. I would not recommend using a helical diff on a live axle car. In a live axle car, you don't have as much suspension travel as a car with an independent rear suspension. When you take enough weight off of the inside wheel, you get just as much wheelspin as with an open diff. With a clutch diff, you can still get inside wheelspin, but the clutch reduces it greatly. Even with the T-Traxx diff, I need to disconnect the rear swaybar when I autocross or I get major wheelspin. I hope that helps.

I'll give it my all to spin it fast to check it out. So rebuild a stock LSD for firmer lock up sounds great when on a budget.
