Ae86 track car build.

Postby Slim604 » Wed Sep 30, 2015 8:52 pm

Hey guys I have an 87 gts coupe. And my build plan is a Evo 8 motor bolted up too a t56 6 speed MT. I know this can be done and installed into the car with relative ease, only a tunnel needs to be made. My question is what type of ecu should I use. Haltech? I know it's going to have to be some sort of gnarly stand alone system with almost the bare minimum to have the car work so, crank position sensor, cam position sensor, water temp, oil pressure and temp, volts, wide band and boost. Money really isn't a big deal at this point. It's going to be going on over that span of at least a year. I'd love to hear any ideas from you guys.

Hi and welcome to club4AG :)

If you can get the uncut engine harness and all the sensors with the
EVO engine, you will probably save yourself a lot of grief by getting a
plug-n-play EVO ECU from any of the "name" ECU manufacturers. That
will give you full control over the engine and make tuning very easy.

And finding out which brand of ECU your tuner is familiar/comfortable
with will help narrow down the brand choice.

I'm going to be doing all of my own tuning as I have full access to a dyno.

Then, if Haltech have a deal going, you could go with that. A PNP
ECU should come with an EVO base map installed which would be
good enough to get the engine running. But if you don't have the
factory engine harness you will need to get the basic ECU with DIY
wiring harness, and wire the engine and sensors yourself.

Check to see if the software for the basic ECU has a dropdown menu
that allows you to select the EVO basic engine timing settings. Those
settings are usually the hardest thing to get your head around.

Thanks man will do. Have you tuned or built a 4g63 before?

Nope, but I wired up and tuned a standalone ECU on a 4AGE :)
Same basic principles though, except you will have a few more sensors
and boost control to deal with. Because it is easy to damage a boosted
engine by running it hard before it is properly tuned, you need to start
off with a rich tune. Then watch your AFR's/listen for knock as you slowly
increase the revs/boost on the dyno and make adjustments to the tune.

Web sites like http://www.dsmtuners.com/ should be able to help you
out, as there is a ton of enthusiast support for the 4G63 engine.

I would suggest that you get on some EVO boards and see what management those guys are using when doing standalones.

EvolutionM.net could point the way. quick searches show that AEM and Autronic are two complete standalones, and Buschur Racing uses the AEM, so that would be a good place to look. Probably be a good resource for recommended configurations and base tunes, etc...
