Re: Red Top Piston Max HP limit

It's more of an issue of what they can/can't do ultimately. Go boosted aiming for 300-400+, and you'll want some GZE pistons or more appropriate forged slugs. NA, you're not applying all that much more stress unless you up the velocities (lengths, angles, speeds) or rpm. It'd be interesting to see i...

Re: Red Top Piston Max HP limit

NA, I can't see you getting close to their limits - knowing your relatively mild build plan. (RPM/compression/fuel choice) Assuming you tried to push a motor to 14:1+ compression and run methanol is another question - I assume that's what it would take to flat out tensile strength kill an oem Toyota...

Re: Surging idle

Would the coolant lines to iacv still be an issue if I had a new radiator installed recently and new coolant etc (koyo rad) Same way you can swap a radiator and still have a clogged heater core - the iacv coolant lines are much smaller though. If nothing flows out of them when they're disconnected ...

Re: Surging idle

Oddball chance, but one of the lines running to the iacv may be clogged as well. Would explain swapping iacvs having no effect. Could disconnect the hoses and spin the water pump by hand/bump the starter - see if it pushes any water out. If I remember right - won't a failed/disconnected coolant temp...

Woot. I'd wondered how long you would be forced to chase the head gasket before I quietly chipped in the custom cut annealed copper idea. Local race shop was fond of it when they did oddball motors or o-ringed setups. I know they did more than a few sans rings, not sure if they were race team servic...

Re: Newb question on how to guide for ITBs on JDM 4AG Bluetop w/ MAP

With the higher compression I'd dial back the timing a few degrees at minimum if you're planning on driving it hard to break in the engine. Ditto Jondee on the wideband, though that'll only tell you how far off you are. Without an adjustable fuel pressure regulator or fueling controls you're at the ...

Re: Newb question on how to guide for ITBs on JDM 4AG Bluetop w/ MAP

Good bearings, balanced internals, and an uprated valvetrain will raise the "safe" rev limiter. Build for 9k, rev to 8k... No point revving that high if the powerband already dropped off though. Nothing you're after here is crazy. That said, I keep hearing "K swap" in my head. :l...

Occasional track day/drift/autocross? Jondee was 1000% right btw. Street cars are fun. Race cars are way too serious. :D I can vouch for this. I've got a big single turbo alcohol injected car. The couple times a year I actually let the thing eat, it's epic. The rest is really loud cruising waiting t...

Fuel type, goals, driving style. Running Pump 93, E85, or race gas? Hp/tq goals? Daily driver, road race, drift, drag, mix, etc? Really basic oversimplified questions but they set the table. Not trying to nag or be a pita at all. Narrowing these things down first just makes victory more likely. ^_^

Folks have been mixing standard setup parts for a long while. Usually just a matter of picking what you're comfortable with/can afford. Carillo's been doing rods forever, same as JE and Arias do pistons... Just a matter of making sure they're all sized appropriately. (Pin bores/locations/correct rin...

Fluid in the booster is a definite pita. That's what killed mine - master failed on both ends. Most of the fluid ended up in the driver's footwell while the rest had in the booster. Some folks use starter fluid or brake cleaner, I prefer nonflammables like soapy water or CO2. Think I partially dropp...

Ahh those insulators I can get them at any toyota in the USA? Per some quick cross checking, the MK4 turbo supra injector kits look like they may work. Following as well. I'm with others as to wondering what else will be in the motor when it's all said and done (compression/cams/valvetrain/porting...) I can understand the draw on the ISF. The exhaust note is unreal with the right setup. :)

Sure the new toy will provide. If you tinker with it throw it up in the build logs here again. Be interesting to see how you work through electrical vs mechanical challenges.

If it doesn't burn off early while warming up and stay clean after, probably coolant. Synthetic oil burns a bit hazy at times, but coolant smells sickly sweet.
