Re: igf
I haven't really looked into this in any depth, but I believe that late model vehicles with factory fitted "smart" coils can detect if a cylinder is misfiring. It probably does this by monitoring the current drawn by the coil. And because the ECU knows the order in which the coils are firi...

Re: Starving for Fuel
Another thought that comes to mind. If the engine is in fact running rich rather than lean, is to check if the vacuum line running to the fuel pressure regulator has become split or been accidentally disconnected ? If it has, then the engine will run rich at idle but should run clean under high rpm ...

This is the original diagram... https://i.imgur.com/4YlsdUk.jpg The technical article that contains the diagram does not indicate where the MAP 4AGE belongs, but there is plenty of evidence that it sits in the Simultaneous category for ECU's with only one transistor. This omission is most likely due...

Re: Starving for Fuel
Sounds to me like your engine might be getting too much fuel rather than not enough. Black tailpipe indicates running rich. The AFM is factory calibrated and sealed. It is not meant to be user adjustable despite what the internet will tell you. If the AFM looks like it has been pried open then a pre...

Re: Throttle body
The crankcase breather usually exits in front of the throttle body which would not work for idle control. Your modification would need to dump straight into the intake plenum after the throttle body. The volume of air required to maintain idle is quite small, so the crankcase vent tube should be OK....

I guess if l blocked a few ports l could do away with all of the standard cold start/idle gubbins too? Exactly. You should be able to pick up a Bosch valve for next to nothing from a junkyard. Be a lot easier to just drill and tap a fitting directly into the inlet manifold rather than be trying to hook it up via the throttle body https://i.imgur.com/w0rThm0.jpg The Bosch valve is used on a lot of engines larg...

Lots of ways of getting there. This was one way I used with a smallport and smallport factory ECU. https://i.imgur.com/GJYX4RG.jpg The smallport has a PWM controlled idle valve built into the airbox. For clarity.... are you saying that with the engine running you cannot get the clutch to disengage sufficiently (or at all) to allow you to select a gear ? What happens if you try to select reverse... does it just graunch and not engage ? Have you set the pedal height and free play correctly ? Does ...

Re: Are there any “low profile” wheel bearing dust caps?
If you only need a few millimetres more to allow you to fit your low profile centre caps,
you could maybe get there with some slip-on wheel spacers. You may need to get some
longer wheel studs if you go that route.

I've had nothing but issues with the COP conversion. With the wasted spark, they overheat and bog out between 5-6000rpm, ^^^^^ truth !!! It is pressed on. You need to press it off AFTER you have marked the shaft and gear so that
you can press it back on in exactly the same alignment and distance up the shaft as it was before.

Re: Batch injection
Didn't HKS have a piggy back that was a sequential injection adapter? Never ran across that one, but thinking about it, maybe it could work. The piggy would have to intercept the ECU injector ground signal, mimic it and direct it to four separate injector drive transistors. Then it would need to sw...

Some pretty crude adjustments being suggested here, so as suggested above, if you are going to do some or all of these adjustment you need to have some way of seeing what AFR's you are getting. The amount of extra fuel you need is determined by the modifications you have made to the engine... cams, ...

Don't know what your rules allow or don't allow ? But a friend of mine who used to tune racing motorcycles told me that one of their tricks was to set the valve lash with the engine hot and as close to zero lash as they could get without risking holding a valve off its seat. A race car engineer who ...

Re: Batch injection
If #10 and #20 are linked in the loom then there is no possibility that the loom could be used with grouped injection. Out of interest I went and looked thru a few wiring diagrams and to my surprise several of the MAP diagrams do show an external link between #10 and #20. However, the USDM AFM AE86 ...

Re: Batch injection
Yeah... I never bothered to look into it but I guess that when EFI was in its infancy the designers just tried to emulate what was being done with a carb and a single coil. The first 16V 4AGE ECU's basically just had one ignition output and one injection output. Then Toyota kept improving things it ...

Re: Batch injection
On the factory AE86 loom that I dismantled, the injectors were definitely wired in pairs and each pair was connected to one of the ECU outputs. That is also the arrangement shown on virtually every reliable Toyota 16V 4AGE wiring diagram I have ever seen. If the pairs are shown as being linked exter...

Re: Batch injection
There is plenty of evidence that MAP-sensored 16V 4AGE engines are batch fired with half the required fuel being delivered every revolution. This is despite the Official Toyota manual not including the 4AGE in the list of engines using this option. Outputs #10 and #20 are strapped together inside th...

Re: Igniter
The only reason your ECU would have the IGd output is to enable it to run the GZE DLI ignition system. Other manufacturers from that era (Subaru, Mitsubishi etc) used an ECU that provided two ignition outputs, a two channel igniter and coilpacks for wasted spark. This was a packaging driven developm...

Re: Igniter
It's been a long time but if I remember correctly you should be able to run wasted spark if you have the GZE DLI igniter and a IGd signal. The GZE uses two 2-pole coils but you can use the IGt to fire a pair of dumb single pole coils (COPs). The IGd signal to the igniter will dictate which pair of c...

Re: blue smoke
It is the first pert of the fume venting setup. It connects to the second part that is a hollow tube cast into the inlet manifold wall. The cast tube terminates with a round hole in the entry face of the inlet manifold, and that matches a vent hole cast in the throttle body. The vent hole opens out ...

Re: blue smoke
The cam cover vent on a 16V 4AGE is a bit deceptive. While it looks like it is extracting into the inlet manifold, the fumes are actually internally channeled towards the intake end of the manifold. They pass thru a hole cast into the throttle body, and exit in front of the throttle plate.... so bas...

On the overrun with a closed throttle and fuel cut operating, oil will get pulled into the combustion chamber and not burned. Once you get back on the...

Be a good idea to take the waxstat off the TB and boil it to see if it opens first. Then see if water
flows thru the valve to heat the wax pellet, as the water side can get blocked up with crud.
