advice on cam timing?!
so this is just a quick one hopefully  i have a smallport 4age with 272 cams on intake and exhaust and its my drift car (ae86). i DO have some adjustable cam gears on but i haven't had the courage or knowledge to really play with them yet! so any advice on what cam timing (ball park) would be m...

smallport head issue?
so at the biggining of this season I switched from a big port head to a smallport head on my 3 rib block. and ever since since I have been running into oil getting to were my plugs are and just pooling up and eventually seeping onto the plug and fouling it out! the drain that's at the back of the sm...

Re: 4age with 272 cams and carbs
As I understand it, the chokes are used to match the carbs to the airflow of the engine. More airflow means you use a bigger choke. Longer cams allow the engine to suck in more air once they start working, so going to a larger choke (or removing the chokes if you are already close to the maximum si...

Re: 4age with 272 cams and carbs
ITS FIXED!! KINDA solo I thought about the over fueling at 3000 topic that jondee brought up. So I got to thinking. What if I just matched the airflow to the fuel flow. So today after work I just simply removed the 4 chokes from the carbs, took it for a few rips and drifts around the block and had N...

Re: 4age with 272 cams and carbs
You sure your accelerator pump is working? sounds like a flat spot from instant flooring. Again I would double check that you have spark and that it isn't blowing out/losing spark at that rpm/load. Idle jets shouldn't have anything to do that rpm. What's your whole set up? Pictures would be cool as...

Re: 4age with 272 cams and carbs
The easiest way to tell if the mixer is rich at 3000 rpm. Does it run better when it is cold, Vs up to temp. If so, then you have a rich mixer. Dave w7 it seems to run the same through out the temperature range. just started up/160/180 seems to do it at the same rpm. heres where I think its a littl...

Re: 4age with 272 cams and carbs
The usual effect of installing longer duration cams is to move peak torque/power higher up the engines rpm range. This results in some loss of VE down low and an increase in VE up high. I'm not familiar with the range of mixture adjustments available in the DCOE carbs, but the engine may be over-fu...

4age with 272 cams and carbs
So this whole summer I've been running my 4age (3 rib block bored 1mm over and a stock small port head) without issues. It also has weber 40 dcoe carbs. So the other day I though I would pep it up. Put some 272 cams with 8.1 lift. Now it still idles fine but when it gets the 3000 rpm its stumbles li...

Re: help with my high compression 16v!!!!!
SORRY FOR THE LATE RESPONSE! all is well with my 16v! so I swapped my low comps in and the motor runs great with no blow by and no excessive crank pressure! just fired it up yesterday and ran some compression tests and all looks great. I will be driving the car today around 5 30 to make sure of this...

ok guys! I have dug up my old low comp pistons and rods from when I bought the chassis and last night I tore the motor down and swapped these in in place of my wiseco high comps! luckily ive torn the motor down enough times this isn't a long task. so when I get home at 5 today im guna finish putting...

Re: help with my high compression 16v!!!!!
Because this stuff is interesting, I dug this out of a random webpage (author was talking about single cam engines, but if you advance/retard both cams on a twin cam the results are the same). Retarding the intake cam only will have some of these effects.. Cam retard Retarding the camshaft (the int...

Re: help with my high compression 16v!!!!!
smoke comes from dipstick tube and from valve cover breather If this is obvious smoke and only after a short time of running it would suggest a piston and/or piston ring problem. Changing valve clearances has the same effect as changing the cam timing and a reason why it is essential to have all cy...

Re: help with my high compression 16v!!!!!
... too much compression??? Very likely too much cranking pressure . Maybe the smallport head has less chamber volume than the bigport head, and that has raised your cranking pressure higher than it was with the bigport head ? Too much cranking pressure and pump gas is a recipe for detonation... an...

Re: help with my high compression 16v!!!!!
as far as I can tell. nothing is getting into the oil I know gasses are getting into the oil pan because smoke comes from dipstick tube and from valve cover breather. I thid the test with my carbs off and engine cold because I just put it back together. then I put the carbs on and ran it for 3 minut...

Re: help with my high compression 16v!!!!!

Re: help with my high compression 16v!!!!!
it is a 3 rib block. I do have a spare 3 rib that i had bored to the same 82 mm pistons. but this same issue happened with the spare block and my large port head towards the end of last year. so i swapped everything over to this current three rib block, and put this small port head on it.

help with my high compression 16v!!!!!
ok guys ill try to keep this short while putting as much info as I can down! I can't help entirely with your question but what are you trying to achieve? Just going to COP? Do you have any ignition advance adjustment? MSD 6AL2 programmable offers adjustment where as the standard 6AL does not. well im realy just trying to see if its even possible haha and yea I just have a 6...

4age 16v with carbs and COP?
just wondering the easiest way to run coil on plug ignition with my high comp dual carb 4age 16v motor. if there is one haha but I have an msd 6al running my ignition at the moment and just regular distributor no vacuum on it or anything. any ideas. ive heard once someone removed the cap but kept th...

Re: converting to fuel injection
An engine control system will need to know the following: o What is the position of the crankshaft for timing injection. So need a crank sensor. You can use the four pulses from a distributor for that information as it is already going to the MSD. o Control system needs to know whether the engine i...

Re: converting to fuel injection
I guess my main question is what is the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM sensors I will need to run if I use an aftermarket manifold (mrp) and some aftermarket ecu. A typical speed-density setup like the 20V blacktop uses will have the following: o Crank sensor o Cam sensor (if you want sequential injection) o TPS...

hey guys, its dumbass here again hahah so I sorted out my block issue and am just about done putting the motor all back together and ive been thinking about this for a while but have never done something like this before. and that is converting my dcoe weber setup to fuel injected. I guess my main q...

so hear is the update... so on my head almost all of the valves were not water tight and the new valves I bought weren't seating right either so through my work I was able to pick up a re-manned smallport for pretty cheap. new everything came with it obviously. still low comp in same cylinders (3 a...

Re: hi compression 4age16v losing compression
So today im putting my factory cams back in and guna re check with my feeler gauges and see what I come up with As regrinds most likely don't take anything off the top of the lobe, and would be looking to get an extra mm of lift, I'd guess they took 1mm off the base circle. You can check by measuri...

ok so here is where I get mad at the kid I bought these cams off of or I hit my self for buying "modded" cams in the first place and not measuring anything. so I dug up my oem cams and measured the lobs the long way. the new cams I put in were 1mm shorter than oem that's why I have the big...

Re: hi compression 4age16v losing compression
you will need thinner shims.... from my expereince Toyota was pretty good with their machining equipment and most often the valve shims are generally between 2.85mm to 3.05mm. Toyota does have shims as thin as 2.3mm, and as thich as 3.5mm. Other places to get shims... 4AFE engines, as well as many ...

Re: hi compression 4age16v losing compression
Easy enough to check the clearances if you have a set of feeler gauges. Just pull the cam covers and turn the engine until the cam lobes are pointing up on the valves you are checking. Try slipping the end of the feelers between the cam and the shim. Use different thicknesses until you find one tha...
