Re: TVIS inlet
There was a time when engines didn't need trick intake manifolds to make torque... http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/FH_images/FH_engine-pics/Flathead_enginecurves_1939-40_95hp.jpg And it was usable torque... there at low rpm so you didn't have to abuse the clutch and rev the snot out of the engine...

Here is a screenshot grabbed from this video... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtX4ocZRITo https://i.imgur.com/4mavjtw.png This is from a mildly modified bigport running smallport 10.3:1 pistons. As can be seen from the graph the difference in bottom end between TVIS ON and TVIS OFF is minimal. I h...

Lots of ideas and lots of work with an unknown result :) Looking at this pic of an bigport-smallport adapter plate, I think it is an easy, totally reversible solution that is well work a try before looking at the more extreme options. https://i.imgur.com/5JXEvgh.jpg Having the airflow going from the...

If you are feeling adventurous, read this... https://sv3power.com/_page_id=324/ You are doing the opposite to this guy but you could look at doing something along the same lines. If you are not fussed about retaining the TVIS you could gut the plate and make your own adapter plate. Easy enough to ad...

This ^^^^. I know it is fashionable to dismiss the information posted by Billzilla as being out of date, but I happen to think that he did know what he was talking about when it came to generalising the upgrade path for the 4AGE. And as I recall (correct me if I am wrong) he stated that while the sm...

Hola Felix... put the original link back up... the one that showed a pic when you clicked on it.
Put up a couple more links if you have some at the same time. So long as they bring up a pic
when you click on them I should be able to get them working for you.
Cheers... jondee86

Re: TVIS inlet
What OST has done with his inlet would be ideal for my application but I'd need to graft a TVIS top on. That would seem to be the ideal solution providing (a) the scrutineers don't know/care how many intake runners the TVIS manifold should have, and (b) that they will not be looking for a TVIS plat...

Re: TVIS inlet
@ OST When I made my manifold I went to the trouble of sloping the throttlebody downwards to match the slope on the factory RWD manifold as it was going into an AE86. I did that in case there was a clearance issue with the closed hood if the throttlebody was installed level. Second reason was that I...

Here are the TRD GroupA 4AGE specs from back in the 80's. They were making around 170hp at the crank back then with a whole bunch of closely controlled parts and camshafts limited to 7.5mm lift. They had to use the factory intake manifold and probably the TVIS plate, but I can't be sure of that. htt...

Re: High C/R & Fuel Octane...
Volumetric Efficiency (VE) is a measure of how efficient your engine is at drawing air in to the cylinders on the intake stroke. If the volume of air drawn in on each intake stroke is equal to the calculated swept volume of the cylinder, the VE is 100%. However, as the intake system will have some ...

The Toyota 86 (Scion) has a static compression ratio of 12.5:1 and runs on 98RON with a modern ECU with knock control. On this basis alone I would suggest that (if available) you run 93AKI. https://i.imgur.com/u0HPjQ5.png However, that is not the full story. To better estimate your octane requiremen...

Re: High C/R & Fuel Octane...
Good question, and there is an easy answer.... if you don't get any detonation under any load, rpm and temperature conditions, then you have enough octane. The chart below gives one generalised answer, but there are many factors involved and no-one can give you a specific answer to the question &quo...

Nice to see that you are putting that car to good use :) No sense in putting money into improving the handling if you don't put it to the test. Sounds good on the dyno... pulls nice and clean so your tuner is doing his job If
you have a copy of the dyno printout that you can post up, I'd be keen to see what
kind of results you are getting at this stage.
Have you been out driving the car yet ?

Re: E10 pump fuel
Difficult to get any hard information as everyone (including me) makes their own best guess on the bad effects of E85. Ethanol is a good solvent and there is enough anecdotal evidence of its effect on old factory rubber hoses that I would replace them with E85 approved hoses. After thirty five years...

Re: E10 pump fuel
Any idea if the standard rubber fuel lines in the rear of the car are E85 safe ? I'm guessing you are talking about an AE86 ? And you are using E85 because you will be boosting it ? If so, and knowing the quality of your previous builds, I would recommend replacing every wetted part from the gas ta...

I wonder how long is too long to leave E10 without using the car? I have seen a figure of 90 days quoted as the recommended maximum. Re: E10 pump fuel
We had 98 octane here in NZ for a while... it was an E10 blend. Discontinued now and replaced with straight 98 octane gasoline as the supply of ethanol dried up due to production being diverted to the manufacture of hand sterilizing products !!! The predominate issue with E10 is that ethanol is hygr...

Yes... I have been waiting for some further information. Apparently that blackened area is a problem. Without anything concrete to go on I'd guess that there is scaling or pitting there possibly caused by water sitting in that cylinder for a long time. The piston looks like it may have been "st...

Re: HIGH comp Big port carby build with MANY questions
If you have the engine out of action for a while, drain the oil out of the pan and put it in a large container. Let it sit for a few days and any water mixed with the oil should separate out. Then very carefully and slowly decant the oil into a second container until there is just a small amount of ...

Re: HIGH comp Big port carby build with MANY questions
MLS head gaskets generally require a finer (smoother) surface finish than than OEM composite gaskets. If you are uncertain of the piston to head clearance, and the finish on the head and block is not specifically prepared for a MLS gasket , you would be better off installing a fresh OEM composite ga...

If the engine is running fine/normally then the cylinder sealing is likely OK. Re: HIGH comp Big port carby build with MANY questions
I'm curious as to why your temperature would go up to 90 and then drop quickly when you rev the engine. Do you have a thermostat installed ? Do you have an electric cooling fan ? If your radiator overflow hose went all the way to the bottom of your soda can, and you fill the radiator to the the top ...

The "sound" is reported as being temperature dependent and also that it suddenly became more noticeable. This tends to point towards some operating condition of the engine having changed. Without being able to offer any scientific reason, when I have been fiddling with engines I have found...
