1mzfe or 3vzfe into ae100 corolla wagon

Postby 4agshoob » Tue Jun 04, 2013 11:34 pm

i am a very avid ae86 and ae100 enthusiest. ive owned 5 ae86's and 5 ae100's. im tired of swapping 4a's...... the wiring is becoming a sleepy event, and just plain tired of bolt in ordinary.

i like to think i have a decent mechanical knowledge, from twincharged 4agzte ae100's to wire x wire swap threads for the ae86, to bike carb converted 4ag's and ae100 time attack car.

anyway, enough rambling.

so i picked up a daily for my wife, a 93' toyota corolla wagon. wagons are kinda rare here in th US, it was cheap, so i went for it. the car is creeping up on 300k miles on the ticker, and the 7afe has started to develop a rod tap. not quite a knock yet, but its been a decent high rpm tap going on 6k miles now. now i can go through the whole rigor mortis of contemplating a 7ag, doing a jdm touring wagon conversion with a blacktop swap, yada, yada, yada. yeah, revert back to the above paragraph.....im bored of the 4a, period.

at one point in time i even thought about 3sgte swapping it, i mean the ae100 engine bay, and st185 engine bay, could pass for twins, as far as mounting areas, and space available. well, i have seen 3sgte swapped camry's, and ive also seen 3sgte swapped ae100's and hell the 3sgte comes in the st185......so i thought about it, thinking if this particular engine can interchange between 3 chassis, oh and then i found the aw11 and sw20, so 5, and one of those cars came v6 oem, yeah..........then i started researching v6 camry engines.....then started googling......seems common in the sw20's, st202's, aw11's, but the ae100........nothing.

if i think about it........

blacktop is 160hp n/a bolt in -$3000 swap
silvertop - meh, blacktop is the better option especially with the c160
4agze ae92/ae101 160hp and big block type torque -$3000 swap, and good luck with finding axles for the e58 stateside.
3sgte is 200hp e153, custom axles -$4000
1mzfe 190 hp, matched torque, -$2000

hmmm, and its lighter than the 3sgte.

then theres the easier 3vzfe, around the same price, 67 lbs. heavier than the 1mzfe

so, seeming as the aw11 engine bay is pretty much a sufficient duplicate of the ae100, ae92, etc. it seems like this would be a great place to start stacking info. with the 1mz in a 2200 lbs. car, even with an automatic, it should move the vehicle fairly well, all while retaining stock reliability. ive searched for a while and have yet to find a 1mzfe swapped ae100, ie found aw11's sw20, celicas, etc. and from what im finding, everyone that ask about this swap for either the ae111 or the ae100, are being told, "good luck with getting it to fit" without any further explanation or arguing facts. like stated above if it will fit in an st185 celica, and the previous mentioned interchangable engine/swap around other chassis, im up to the challenge, and ask the question...."why not"

ive seen the northstar swapped aw11, i know he had to cut some stuff, but it did eventually fit. thats a wide engine,

im down for the cause, and looking to score.

This!! It's lighter. But while you're at it, why not the bigger 3MZ? Bigger displacement, more torque available lower in the (wider) torque range.

Then you have the trans fitment to deal with. Top of my head, there is a "possibility" taht the first gen RAV4 (3/5SFE 4-cyl. engine) gearbox may fit without that much drama.

Images I've found in about 20min time. a VZ series V6 in a Corolla

yeah, I guess a blow-by-blow account of such unusual swap will a be bit too much to ask. But he must have like, a facebook account or something in that social aspect. If you decide to go ahead with this swap, you'll be the first to document that on this site.

The 1mz or other V6s in this size of chassis or smaller is until now, it seems, still unpopular/dark territory for at least the Toyota FWD econo cars. There some old Civics running Acura's V6s, recently I saw a 6A12 V6 from a Galant swapped into a Mitsubishi Colt... so anything is possible in this area. Only with Toyota, with the probable exception of the recent GR series, there are no V6 produced for high performance duty. All are put into SUVs, large family sedans and utility vehicles.

well, kinda. the 1mz does have vvti, then you have the 3mz, which alot of guys are finding you can throw 1mz heads on, run 2mz intake cams, and 3mz exhaust cams and make somewhere around 260hp.

with doing this, your basically stroking the 1mz. considering the only difference between the 1 and 3 is the bore.

honestly, from a performance aspect, 190hp in an ae100 is pretty damn peppy. hell, a stock gze in an ae100 is pretty decent, especially with the e58 attached to it. 190hp from the 3vz is plenty daily power. i suppose i could look into the 3mz, and then 220hp and 230lbft. in an ae100 becomes "fast", even if its automatic, which i plan on staying. vin the future, i could do the s54 trans swap and manual swap the wagon, but in all honesty, ive got an 87' gts ae86 for having fun. the wagon more or less is a family hauler/grocery getter/drift pit car.

i guess my biggest question is, what is really to overcome when doing the obd2 car into the obd1 chassis? for example:

charging system? isnt it analog vs. digital?

odometer? while i dont really car about keeping up with mileadge on a 93 ae100 corolla, isnt the speed sensing system for the speedometer tied in with the odometer? so how would i go about getting my speedometer to work in the ae100, being as its currently driven, via electro mechanical sensor?

tach signal? im assuming i can overcome this with a dakota digital tach adapter style box, putting a square wave digital 6 cyl tach pulse into my concave wave analog 4 cyl tachometer.

fuel sending unit? from what im reading, when doing the 1mz returnless fuel system, you have to use either an in tank regulator with a 4, or jerk out the camry sending unit, and how is that gonna coincide with my current fuel gauge?

this is where the 94 3vz pre obd engine seems like the less headache simpler action. however if i have to grab an obd2 camry or what ever donar cars, cluster, and fit it into my ae100, im down for that too.

as for the welding part, making mounts, mechanics, etc. thats not a biggy, i can cover that stuff. hell i can coer the wiring too, its the conversions from the digital obd2 to make the obd1 car run is the weird part not known to me.

Soooo.... maybe a better way WOULD be to buy a dead RX330, Avalon or such and transfer everything to the Corolla? Might be easier? I think that the ECUs of said machines are really tailored to those behemoths. Gray area again you know.

Hi! yeah, me again. Check this out. Okay, it's a Celica but what he did addresses issues you mentioned. At least the majority.

Wow, blast from the past. I never persued this swap with the ae100 chassis. However- now in 2022, I just bought an 07 Pontiac vibe (matrix) for $800, with 160k, ice cold air, and 40mpg of daily beating.

Of course, I can't even leave the beater alone. I've done a few bolts ons to the 1zz, but- let's be honest, it's a lost cause.

Since this initial idea came up, I've since wrode in a stock 06 XLE Camry fitted with a 1mz. PLENTY-O-POWER. We ran down a few "sports cars" in it- jag f-type, a few 350/370z's, mustangs, etc.

Then we put a TRD supercharger on it, some injectors, and other little tweaks. Almost tickled 300 on the dyno, but nearly doubled torque output.
.
So now I'm here. An 07 Pontiac vibe, that I'd love to troll with, and build a nasty little.sleeper. on the hunt again.

V6 AE100/101 corolla would be a quick daily. Even with auto tranny would leave most in the dust, from a stop light
Should be just enough torque to plant, without overwhelming. Donor car cheap. Exhaust mote unmatched(with the right muffler)
Not the easiest swap, but a wealth of useful MR2 V6 swap available to get you thru

If the engine is to retain stock electronics I'd say go with the 3VZ-FE, unless you have good skills with wiring.
One shot, one kill.
