AE92 Small Port with Silver top or Black top ITB

Hello all, I have just bought a 1990 AE92 GTI with a small port engine. This car does not have any mod on it yet so I am planning to do something on it.
When I was writing the list and my plan, I could find so much information from internet but there is still one thing that confuses me.
When I look into putting an ITB from either a Silver top or Black top, do I need to have the adapter between the ITB and the small port header? I saw some AE86 using ITB from these 20V engines but seldom see AE92 using that so very limited information I could find.
