Some crankcase pressure after rebuild

Postby onnaj » Wed Jul 24, 2013 11:58 pm

Hello,

I've rebuild my 4AGE 20V Blacktop and drove about 1800 miles since. When i was on the dyno i noticed i have some crankcasepressure while some smoke came out of the Crankcase breather filter.

We've checked compression with a warm engine and it has 190 PSI (+- 1 PSI) on all 4 cylinders. The engine isn't using oil so far.

The guy at the dyno told me that this is seen often with a fresh rebuild engine, but i'm a bit concerned. It's a lot of money that went into the engine, not speaking off all the effort it costed me ;).

Or can my exhaust cause some extra pressure? I have a stock 7AFE exhaust which diameter on the last exhaust part is only 40 mm (1.5"). I can imagine that when the air cannot flow freely through the exhaust pressure is building up.

This is the movie on which you can see some smoke coming out the breather filter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXd2dfdHgmc

Hope someone can tell me i shouldn't woory :)

Do you also know how to test the PCV valve? It's not an expensive part to replace, think it costs about $20 or so.

EDIT: Think i have to add a line: I have no coolant loss. Before installing the head the head was vacuum tested and there were no leaks on the valves.

Perfectly normal breather behaviour.

It all depends on what the definition of 'some' is, quantitywise.
No, it is not the exhaust system no matter what it is doing.
As the above, perfectly normal. Just drive it, otherwise, what are you gonna do?
Get a leak-down test to satisfy morbid curiosity.

I never had a crankcase breather filter before on any car, so i didn't if it was normal.

The car uses no oil or coolant and the dyno run itself was not bad. Wasn;t completey happy with the power outcome, but that has it reasons ;) Still 121 WHP is not bad for a stock 1.6 :P

had the same prob and I'm using air/oil seperator instead of PVC, and it was a lot of pressure ended up re-routing crankcase vent tube from tvis plenum to black plastic intake tube in front of throttle body
