Oil consumption after rebuild

Hello,

I've completely rebuild my 4AGE 20V Blacktop about 6000 km ago (3800 miles ago). When i had the special break-in oil the engine used only 300-400 ml (0.3 - 0.4 qt). After approx 2400 km (1500 miles) i replaced the engine oil with about 3litres Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 A1 (meets the API and ILSAC requirements for the blacktop).
After another 3600 km i've already added 1 litre and now it could use another 300 ml i guess. Have to add that i have a distributor leak and i had a VVT sensor leak. The VVT leak i've fixed the previous week. How much would a distributor leak cause? 200 ml probably? Still i think it's a bit much oil usage, or is this normal with a breaking in engine? Some say after about 10.000 km (6000 miles) the oil usage will get better as also the fuel consumption. But the fuel consumption i'm already statisfied with

I drive the ride always warm (min 15 minutes driving). When warm i do take the BT to 8000 rpm sometimes. But i totally respect the engine.

Any ideas?

Hello mate...if you have a leak 200ml from distributor...you ll probably have a lake of oil under the distributor. I think is not possible.(at least not to much) if the engine rebuilding was appropriate ..then i believe that your oil consumption is too much..maybe the rings do not bend yet? Another factor is the viscocity of the oil you are using..5w30????? are you living at alaska?this oil is too thin mate ..i ll probably go to a 10w40 100% synthetic. I have the 16v recently rebuilded ...i am using amsoil 10w40 amo.Oil consumption at about 500ml/5000km.
Thats my opinion ...lets here other opinions now

Strange thing is with the break-in oil it used almost no oil at all. With this oil it's usage is much higher. I know the 20v's uses more oil then the 16v's, but indeed it's a bit too much. The rebuilding was appropriate, i even measured 190 psi on all 4 cylinders with a max difference of 1psi. Toyota says in the manual that a new engine has 193 psi, so compression rate is really good.

I live in holland by the way I'm thinking of changing to 10W40, but 100% synthetic 10W40 is not readily available over here i think. 5W40 full synthetic is easier to get. I think Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 isn't bad either.

hello my friend!ok use an oil at least 5w40, which are the temperatures at your country?

It's not hot here. In winter mostly around 0 degrees celcius, somettimes -10 max, but mostly not that cold. In summer the temp is around 23-25 degrees.

so go ahead and buy a 5w40 amsoil if you can afford , the things will be better for sure....if you want something that burns even slower buy a red line 5w40 . It has evaporation loss about 6% ,amsoil has 6.9%... but generally amsoil is better . Your choice mate

Amsoil is not readily available over here. There one supplier i think, but then it costs about $30 a litre!!

I think i'm going for the shell ultra helix 5W40. Full synthetic and long live. I've read somewhere that only after 10k km it wil become a W30.

Gearbox was cleaned 2000 miles ago...pretty dirty again


Part of the engine is pretty dirty also. Happily i painted it matt black!

kbox engineering makes a dizzy rebuild kit with a new bearing and seals. I think it was less than $20. The hardest part was getting the gear off without completely destroying it. Just take some time and drill the pin out making sure you drill straight.

If the car is burning that much oil, you will know it. A little drop of oil will make a ton of smoke. My guess would be that you are leaking it all out.

My brother drove behind me for about 200 km's and he only saw a really small blue plume when i was shifting @ 8200 rpm. But he didn't know for sure if it was either black or blue so small it was.
