MAP and Emissions

Postby P3nnyw1se » Fri Sep 27, 2013 6:30 pm

I've got someone who's selling an MAP setup for a 4AG in good condition with some parts that I've been looking to get. Now my question is, if I decide to go the route of MAP instead of AFM, can I still pass emissions in Oregon without any major issues popping up? I've been trying to find more information about the topic but haven't found much. I guess where most people have their GTS', they don't have to deal with emissions.

Thanks all!

MAP is illegal to do since the ECU has no Ca or Federal number
Will it pass the sniffer tho?
My guess is yes

That's all they run in Oregon so that should be fine. Thanks!

Probably depends on what part of oregon. The research I've done seems like DEQ is most strict in metro portland area, but if you do a map conversion CLEANLY, I doubt they would even know. Really depends on whether smog techs actually check the vacuum diagram against the hood label. I've also heard guys in the rural areas of oregon literally say "you have to have a cat on your car in the city?" No joke.

Personally I don't see a problem with an afm, so I would have no reason to switch. In fact, afm would be easier, as the wiring will be exactly where you need it to be. Map will be more trouble than it's worth, IMO. If you have AFM in place, no reason to change it.

Thanks man! I'm actually trying to get an AFM but haven't found one that I can buy/trade off anyone at the moment. I have yet to build the engine, so I figured I'd go with whatever route would be cheaper for me. Unfortunately the MAP setup is gone so I can't get a hold of that anymore. They never pop the hood on my car so I wouldn't think they would know. The audible note from the exhaust should be the same. Plus the car was originally a California one with charcoal canister and everything so I'd be wiring that in either way to clean up the emissions some. Which do you guys think is better overall for performance? I've read that it doesn't make much of a difference either way and that AFM might be little better at sensing things but it's just something I've been wondering about.

Map merely senses pressure, afm senses flow. Take that as you will.

As for power? You won't notice any difference. Some claim that maps were magically more powerful, but you could attribute that to higher octane japanese gas coupled with increased timing, who knows.

I would go with afm in any situation where I plan to use a stock computer because USDM parts like that will be much easier to find in the long run.

AFM senses VE changes, MAP does not.
This means that if you put in cams and IHE and your car started moving a lot more air or even if the VE curve just changed it's profile the AFM setup would adjust fueling much more accurately. The MAP setup would be much more likely to run lean in areas and or rich in others.
MAP is great with aftermarket engine management where you can modify the VE tables but I prefer AFM for tuning on stock ECU.
