Hello,
yesterday i've almost snapped my waterpump/alternator vbelt. It only had 3 rows left of the 5. We couldn't find anything causing it besides that it looks a bit like the waterpump isn't allignent perfectly compared to the alternator and crankshaft pulley. Maybe this is visional but i'm wondering if more people encountered this problem? The belt was only 10.000 km old.
I removed the crankshaft pulley and couldn't see anything wrong at the first row. I removed the water pump pulley afterwards and couldn't see anything wrong also. It seems like the neck may not be long enough to allign with the other pulleys. It looks like it's to close to the engine. But once again it's diffcult to see with the bare eye.
I'm using a GMB waterpump btw.
What are other possible causes of a belt snapping?
I now reinstalled a new GATES 5pk838 belt (had a mitsoboshi belt on it). Hopefully this will last longer, but i'll keep a good eye on it. Both belts don't squeal when new. The squealing with old belt started after about 8000 km and now with 10.000 km it almost snapped.

What chassis is this in?
FWD and RWD have different pullies and water pumps. Is it possible you are running a mix and match of FWD and RWD parts?

Hi,
Its in a 1998 Celica ST. I used all 20v Parts like the crankshaft pulley, 20v alternator, 20v water pump, etc. Originally it was an auto transmission but i don't think that'll make any difference.

Perhaps you got the wrong 20V water pump? Silvertop and blacktop are different (I'm not sure about their interchangeability).

I'm not sure where you're looking on Toyodiy, but the part numbers are as follows:
16100-19245 - Silvertop Complete
16100-19285 - Blacktop Complete
16110-19125 - Silvertop without Rear Housing
16110-19195 - Blacktop without Rear Housing

16110-19125 - Silvertop without Rear Housing

Jeff is correct.
I am not sure what the difference is but they are different.

You need all FWD or all RWD if you want the pulleys to line up. The RWD
pump has a longer "nose" so the pulley has more offset to compensate.
Running a FWD pulley on a RWD pump means the pulley will be 6 or 8mm
forward of where it should be for alignment.

Thanks for the pictures. I definetaly have the fwd pulley.
If i search on the blacktop oem number, the silvertop also shows up in the result:http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/xref?v=J_199704_TOYOTA_LVN_AE101-ATFVF_1601.2&s=1610019285
Maybe the part number has changed?

Re: 4age 20V Water pump seems not to line up??
ToyoDIY's part number search is iffy at best, you need to go to each application to verify it, and if you do, you'll see that 16100-19285 does in fact not fit any silvertops.
(-9505 = Silvertop, 9505- = Blacktop)
The part numbers haven't changed, not even to an updated part. The original part numbers are still active now.

Re: 4age 20V Water pump seems not to line up??
Hi
Ok this is what i find while doing my 20v bt swap to my ae86 on the water pump case.
As far as silvertop 20v i never see one before.
16v rwd water pump are different from the BT .
The back plate is i guess depend on rwd or fwd format... So that would not be your problem... Your problem lay in the front half of the pump... Which if you get a silvertop pump neck in front where pulley will be mount to is about 2mm longer then the BT .... So i do think the. ST and the 16v rwd pump is the same in the front half at least.
Find a complete bt pump front and back or.... I found that the front half of the 16v bluetop from an mr2 is the same length as the Bt but the mr2 frint have maybe strong because it seem to have more rib on them... And they line up just right....
Hope that help you...

Re: 4age 20V Water pump seems not to line up??
I rechecked my order from previous year and i order the GMB pump with OEM number 16100‑19285.
Maybe i just did something wrong with mounting the belt the first time?! I'll will drive another 10.000 km and will see if it'll snap again. Otherwise i'll buy a new OEM Toyota water pump.
Thanks for all the info!
