20V silvertop clutch replacement, can I use 16V?

Postby k20 hatch » Fri Feb 28, 2014 7:45 am

As per the subject;

Ive got a 20V silvertop in a 1993 corolla wagon. No aftermarket mods, just a stock 4age.

I need to replace the clutch and throwout + input shaft bearings, and am having a hard time finding the 20V replacement parts here in the states.

If i was to swap down to the 16V flywheel, would I be able to run the 16V clutch, throwout bearings and input shaft bearings? I understand that the 16V clutch disk and flywheel mating surfaces are 200mm, as opposed to the larger 212mm of the 20V, so was wondering if this was an issue. I have heard of people swapping the 20V flywheel and clutch into the 16V, but never the other way around.

Sorry for the noob post

:)

if you have a 20v flywheel, you have a 212mm clutch/flywheel combo. the later 16v's used that size, the early used 200mm. best to measure the contact surface to find out. either way, clutch and flywheel need to match. for more info, look in the tech reference section on the home page under flywheel analysis.
haha cali...i got one of your 86's and you're not getting it back.

Like was stated, the 20V used the same clutch as the later 16V's, so the correct clutch should be readily available in North America, you just need to make sure you have the 212mm flywheel and not the 200mm.

Yep, you can use the 200mm flywheel if you want or you can get a 212mm disk and PP and run that.
If this is going into a front engine RWD setup you will need to buy the pilot and throwout bearing separate since the 212mm clutches only came in FWD cars.

Yoshi, thanks for the info and the links to your site, so just to confirm, I need the following kit, and it looks like it contains the throw out and pilot bearings too for fwd application?

I should spend a little time updating and clarifying on those products.
I recently found out that Exedy advertises and sells the same clutch kit for the transverse setup like in the AW11 and longi setup like in the AE86. The RWD trans uses a different throwout bearing and like morgan said no pilot bearing.
I have talked to Exedy about changing this but they haven't done anything about it yet.
This means if you go exedy you will need to get a pilot bearing and throwout bearing in addition to the kit.
If you got the 200mm ACT that I have up there in the AE86 section it would come with the right throwout and pilot bearing.
If you wanted a 212mm ACT we would need to piece that one together too since 212 never came in a FR car so they don't offer a kit for it.

If you wanted the Exedy you linked to you would just need to also get this throwout bearing.

And this pilot bearing.

Ordered my clutch from matrixgarage today, thanks for the help everyone. Ended up being cheaper than if I was to get it from the local B+M.
