How to Pass SMOG in Cali with ITBs

Postby MrButterMyBiscuit » Wed Feb 11, 2015 3:16 pm

So I'm looking into buying a gts that has ITBs and a straight pipe without the cat. I was wondering if there was any way to get such a car smog legal in California. Obvious things like installing a catalytic converter and a legal exhaust are probably required but I don't know how the ITBs affect it all. The only thing holding me back from joining the ae86 club is being legal and smog compliant in California. I'd love to drive it on the streets without worrying about mobile smog checkpoints and the like. Thanks in advance.

You will not pass a legitimate smog test with itb's. You wiil fail the visual as they are not original and have no egr capabilities.

Lol, yea it's gotta be a legitimate smog test. Any suggestions for getting more power while remaining smog compliant? Approx what rwhp can I expect from a smog compliant 4age with mods?

Find a county that is still exempt from the smog program and move there.

you are never going to pass smog
in California your Toyota Corolla AE86 GT-S's engine needs to be 100% original
and all smog components in working order to be legal

you however can do a swap of a passenger car the same year or newer with all factory items in place
i.e. S2000 engine and get it certified smog legal by your local referee station

easiest way to be legit is just to keep the engine stock

Run smallport pistons, a ported head, nothing bigger then a 256 cams( I passed with Web's 294 grind), and a new cat. Make sure all of the original manifolds, and intake system are used.

Have all the machine work performed very carefully. You want main bearings to run in the middle of the spec, while rods can run a little on the loose side of the spec. If using the OEM gasket you want the pistons sticking above the block by .2mm(.008") You may have to dicker around a little with timing, but it should be able to pass.

Those mods should get you a legal 125+rwhp.

125+ @ the wheel ?
stock GTS is about 85~89hp @ the wheel

That's a big jump in power (36+ hp)
Highly unlikely IMO
i'm guessing at most 104~106 @ the wheels with those mods

Max... you've had lame 4AGEs.... or they weren't built very carefully

my first build - smallport pistons with no special machine work, stock deck, stock head gasket, the only port work was the seats to bowls - no chamber work, no interior bowl work, and no exhaust port work, Web 294 mild cams

I tend to build my 4AG's tighter so they lost longer
Furthermore it was an estimation
I don't build dyno/gaqrage queens

you really think that is a dyno queen??? Really??? The engine in the dyno above... has nearly 90,000 miles on it now.... still pulls strong. It was built in 1999... so that would make it 16 years old now.....

Max... there IS quite a bit of horsepower trapped in the stock head.........

I have been running Sealed Power bearings that are available at O'Reiley. They measure exactly in the middle of factory spec.

A rebuilt largeport engine with smallport high compression pistons and Tomei poncams really livens the car up. That is exactly what I have in my car currently. Unfortunately, the smallport pistons have larger wristpins, so you will also either need the 42mm crank and matching rods or some custom rods if you have the 40mm crank. If you can find some AE111 blacktop rods, that would be a nice weight reduction with the 42mm crank and AE92 pistons. I'm able to run 89 octane fuel, but the engine pings badly with 87, so that is another cost of higher compression.

What I meant to imply is I rarely put cars up on the dyno
just build them for the street
so numbers are not the ultimate goal
just a bump in hp over stock at most
