Make sure it really is a smallport. If it came from Toyota in an AW11, it isn't. The easy way to tell is if you have the TVIS plate between the intake mani and the head.

Not sure about hr specifics of your ITBs. But mine, I needed to ditch the old MAF sensor and replace with a MAP sensor to run ITBs. Also need hoses to connect tank vacuum box that connects to each of the ITB intake runners. The vacuum box hooks up to the MAP sensor and also hooks up to the brake booster though a one way hose connector.

Not sure about if the stock redtop ECU would support ITBs, I'm guessing probably not. I think the silver top and blacktop ECUs are not set up to run a 16v. You probably need an aftermarket ECU to get everything running.

you can run the ITBs on the oem jdm map ecu, but it will not run very well.

Idle will be **** amongst other things.

IMO, going with ITBs for looks is a bad call.

If i was going to go with ITB's:

Forged pistons(11.5:1 or higher)
Ported & Polished head, big valves
288* or larger cams, shimmless buckets, dual valve springs.
DIYPNP

Honestly its going to be a huge headache to get it to run properly and unless you are going to the above mods, its a waste as it isnt needed. and the time to make it run will not be worth the gains

OST will chime in at some point. Look at his build.

How is it that no one in the car world knows the difference between an AFM and a MAF?
4AGEs have a AFM.

You can in fact run ITBs on an AFM ECU but you need the AFM before the ITBs. For some this is not acceptable because they purely want the ITBs for look/sound.
Not that there is any good reason to run ITBs on the stock ECU.
As MisterJerk said there is really no benefit to them until you are well outside the capability of the stock ECU.

Ah! I thought the terms were interchangeable since I saw it on the forums here and there. A quick wikiing doesn't provide much insight. Could you enlighten me? Thanks!

Dang, I could have sworn wikipedia had it correct but even looking at back history it isn't. This makes me wonder where I have linked to in the past because I can't find it.
Basically an AFM measures volumetric flow rate. Often (and in the case of 80s Toyotas) this is done via the pressure differential across a flapper door.
MAF measures mass airflow. There are different types. I would say that the Wikipedia descriptions of the other types of mass airflow sensors is close enough to correct but an AFM is not a MAF and does not measure mass airflow rate.

Haha yeah I was looking at the two wiki pages for air flow meter and mass flow meter/mass flow sensor and they all seem the same. Okay, so the AFM in the AE86s measures something like "cubic meters per second" instead of "kilograms per second". Good to know. Thanks!
