What variant of 4agze do I have ?

Postby PDB » Sun Jul 26, 2015 11:28 am

Hey guys, I've had a 4agze for a while in my garage, I don't know which vehicle it's come from, is there a way I can tell ?

Have looked at the specs here http://club4ag.com/faq_and_tech_pages/4A-GZE_specs.htm

Seems only way to tell is by the Pistons and rods ?

Is there any pics online to compare to when I strip this one down?

First check is big port or small port, look for the oil return from the head at cyl. 4 to the block just above the sump on the intake side to identify a small port.
From what I've seen the AE92 superchargers don't have a cover over the clutch and look like a + whereas the AE101 S/Cs have a cover.
MR2s have a distributor whereas the rest have twin coil packs.
Have you a loom or ecu as that will also help ID things.

Wiki says this....
The 4A-GZE (produced in various forms from August 1986 through 1995) was a
supercharged version of the 4A-GE. Based on the same block and cylinder head,
the 4A-GZE engine was equipped with a Roots type supercharger producing 8 psi
(0.6 bar) peak manifold pressure, and the compression ratio was lowered to 8:1
with the use of forged and dished pistons. Although fitted with upgraded pistons,
they still had the same ports, valve timing, and head gasket as the naturally
aspirated 4A-GE engine, although T-VIS was omitted.

It was used in the supercharged MR2, rated at 145 PS (107 kW; 143 bhp) at 6400
rpm and 190 N·m (140 ft·lbf) at 4400. In 1990 it was updated with the "smallport"
cylinder head, 8.9:1 compression, and MAP D-Jetronic load sensing and a smaller
supercharger pulley producing 10 psi (0.7 bar). These updated 4A-GZE motors
were rated at 165 PS (121 kW) and 210 N·m (155 ft·lbf) for the 1990/1991 AE92
Corolla and 170 PS (125 kW) for the AE101.

So basically two versions... early model with bigport head and distributor, and
a later model with smallport head, coilpacks, CAS and external oil drain.

Cheers... jondee86

I am not terribly knowledgeable on this subject but I believe it's a little more complicated than wiki says.
I am fairly certian there is a smallport dizzy model and then there is the smallport DLI model.
I am also not positive that all smallport GZEs were MAP but I am not real sure on this.

Whatever the case it should be real easy to tell if you have the smallport head and supercharger with 10 PSI pulley. It should also be easy to tell if you have dizzy or DLI and AFM or MAP.
Once you identify all these you should have a good idea of what you have.

It's a big port with Dizzy, don't have the SC either, so it would appear to be an early engine.

There are 4 versions total of the 4A-GZE, though for the most part there are more like 3 types:

8.0:1 Compression Largeport Head with Distributor (AW11)
8.0:1 Compression Largeport Head with DLI (CPS and Coils) (Early AE92 - 87.5-89.5)
8.9:1 Compression Smallport Head with DLI (CPS and Coils) (Late AE92 - 89.5-91.5 and AE101 - 91.5-95.5, minor differences to intake piping and electronics on the AE101)

The main difference is largeport or smallport and if it's a largeport whether it has a distributor or not. Only the AW11 type with distributor was ever sold in North America.

It should be relatively easy to tell between the versions externally.

So I have a 8.0:1 compression engine, with a 0.5 TRD gasket what would that bring it up too ?

about 8.6 ish but using a .5mm gasket on anything other than a stock uncut block MAY lead to "tapping" of the piston against the head.... :o

Thanks guys, the engine is still original so should be fine, I have the gasket left over from my last build as I ended up having the block skimmed so couldn't use it.
