Rebuilt 4age + MS diypnp questions

Postby Jeonsah » Sat Feb 02, 2013 10:21 am

Hello,

So I am going to be finishing up a smallport 4age rebuild soon and I plan on running a megasquirt diypnp. I have an electrical background, so wiring the diypnp wont be an issue. I will be attempting to run the smallport with a silvertop itb setup. The car will be using the factory AE86 GTS harness. The problem I am running into is:

1. Breaking in a rebuilt 4age while getting the engine to run and be tuned. What would be the best way to approach this?
2. Also, any ideas, opinions are welcome

Obviously since it is a fresh rebuild, I dont want to screw anything up.

Thanks

Do a smooth idle tune for now. Its important to do several up to operating temps & cool down cycles at a steady rpm level (between 1500-2000 rpm).. I'd do an oil & filter change for each cycle when the engine has cooled down (use non-synthetic)

get a wide band and watch your EGT's
get too much fuel and you will washout the rings

why you want run ITB's?

have you done anything to the engine internally?

Thanks for the info

Some background on the engine:

I have had the head & block milled. I will be running a trd 0.8mm head gasket. The block was bored over with new toyota pistons to match. I am going to be sending the head off for some more work (it already has been hot tanked, shimmed, new valve seals, valve job, and milled). Lastly, the pistons will be coated and crank, rods, pistons will be balanced. The engine is being built to have a DCR higher than 9 to run 272 cams. The CR will be 1.3 lower than normal because of the high altitude here in Colorado. I will most likely run the engine on stock cams before I upgrade.

I have been reading some tuning books and I have a pretty good understanding of how to tune the engine. I am planning on getting a wide band to monitor the a/f ratios. I want itb's because of the sound of course.

My main concern is properly getting the engine to run correctly while not putting a whole lot of stress on it before break in. Unless theres a particular way to approach this scenario, I do have a jdm smallport map setup(harness + dizzy + ecu). I could use that at first to brake the engine in but im hoping I could go straight to MS.

Stress is what breaks it in, not idling. The trick is to not over heat it. Not the coolant temp, it will take too long for baked oil & cooked rings to show up on a water temp gauge to do you any good.
Run it under a load, only a high idle, check plugs & compression, change oil at 500. That's it, most/90% ring breakin/wear is done in the first 5 minutes.

Max is right Jeonsah. A wideband a/f will help you keep things safe for the new motor

So as far as tuning the engine for WOT, will that be anything to worry about (bad on the new engine) after getting a basic idle down?

Thanks for the comments guys!

Sounds like maybe you would have been better off buying a AE111 black top
If you want to run ITB's that is the best option IMO

ITB's on a 16V is expensive

ITB's work best with lots of head work, lightened crank, high compression, aftermarket rods, aftermarket pistons, OS valves, and big cams
To get everything dialed in you should do some tuning on a proper dyno

Best of luck to you tho and post some pics of your setup

Thanks for the help. Ill be sticking with this route. I will be taking the car to the dyno once I am able to get it running and driveable to the shop. I will post some pics in the summer time of the build. Thanks agian

this is what i did in the past.

i break in the motor with STOCK everything for 1000 miles..

after that i just installed all my itb's cams or watever.

since ur going to be using the MS system, diy pnp - it should have a start up map provided.. the MS forums should have people sharing their ITB maps as well .. that will get you started.

but since breaking in engine is pretty important.. i would go with what you know works - stock setup..

it will be worth it if you wait. =D enjoy
