Engine Started - Trouble Timing

All,

It's been a few days and I have gone through the procedure of trying to time my recently started 4AGE that I rebuilt. Everything sounds great, but I am having trouble timing it now. I am getting timing that is retarded to the point where it is to the left of the scale on the timing cover, and when I try to advance to 10 degree in diag mode, the car is almost dying...I'm doing something wrong. I have referenced a few other posts and have tried to reposition the distributor, but figured I'd ask.

This is what I have done.

1. Made sure that the cams are set and the marks line up.
2. Made sure that the crank sprocket is aligned with the dimple and that the notch in the crank pully is pointing at 0 degrees.
3. Open the intake cam cover and the first intake valve is opened.
4. After this, I am lining the drilled dimples of the distributor (with the cap off) and am slowly putting it in with the rotor pointed right after IG1. I initially put the distributor in as level as I can and tighten it just so it will not move at startup.
5. I am warming the motor up. When the car first starts, it sounds great. After the motor heats up, the idle starts to drop and is at about 1000.
6. At this point, should I be adjusting the idle screw to set it to 800 before setting the time? That is what is shown in my manual.
7. I am shorting the diag plug to place it in diag mode correctly and understand that I should hook my light up and tune the dizzy to get timing to 10 degrees. My problem is that the car is almost dead at 10. Not much better when I start it outside of diag mode. The motor struggles to start even. I have tried to adjust the idle screw at this point, and it seems pointless.
8. When timing initially, the light is showing I am guessing, at 35 or more degrees.

I have taken the distributor out about 8 times now to try to re-position it. I seem to only be going in right at IG1 and halfway to IG2. I can take the exhaust cam cover off to make sure and based off what I am reading, this is probably the issue.

Any ideas? I followed the manual to set the TPS and I am getting good throttle response. Motor sounds good when revving. I am using an MR2 distributor as well. Plugs and everything seem the exact same.

It does feel like when Im putting the distributor in (while the dimples are aligned) that it notches just a hair to the left (rotor moves down a tiny bit...) Is this really that delicate? took the exhaust cover off to see...

Guys,

I think I got it. I just kept putting the dizzy in and out until I had it just a hair after IG1. Seems to have done the trick. I timed it to 10 in diag and it is going between 15-16 when started normally. I adjusted the idle screw after it warmed up during regular run. I am going to upload a video to YouTube. Can I get a seasoned ear to listen and see if this is done right? It's quite cold out tonight, so there is a lot of exhaust fumes. Figure that is normal.
