Little bit valve noise 4AGE 20V BT

Postby onnaj » Tue May 14, 2013 2:29 pm

Hello,

I have a fresh rebuilt 4AGE 20V BT. I runs okay, a bit of hestitation but that's most probably because of a worn TPS sensor. Maybe it's damaged during transportation from japan ;)

We noticed we hear the valves a bit. The ticking noise is more present than with the 7AFE. I have to admit i don't have a radio and my glove compartement in, so i hear it better, but still it's a bit more then with the 7AFE. Does the 20V always make a bit more valve noise then other engines, regarding it has 20 valves instead of 16 in my old engine?

When cold the noise is less then when it warms up by the way. It seems to disappear above approx 3k rpm. Didn't go any higher then 3750 RPM or so, cause it's in the break in so i want to be carefull.

Thanks!

If it's a rebuilt motor that means the valves were inspected right? Are they all in spec?
My BT is very quiet.
I have heard people say the VVT actuator can make a similar noise but haven't experienced it myself.

The valves were also inspected, grinded, new valve stem seals, etc. I have to admit the valve clearance was just at or just above spec. So they might be a bit loose. We didn't want to install it too tight while the valve need to be seated a bit after the grinding. So hopefully it'll work out fine or otherwise i have to take the cover over and take the valves out and order new shims.

Drove about 70-80 miles and the ticking is still there.

Check this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ok_s7SYjJsY&feature=youtu.be video to hear it. Maybe it's also because of the special 'break-in' oil i have?

At the oil control valve you have 2 wires. Ground the red one at idle. I just used a pin in a block connector and a length of wire to the -ive bat terminal.

This will activate the vvt and the noise should go. The idle will become really really rough but the noise should go. That's if it is the vvt.

I'll try this! Good tip, thanks!

That's the wrong part number btw. That one is from the silvertop. The Blacktop is cheaper, only $20 but still cheaper :D That number is 13050-16020

I thought btw that the VVT gear only makes noise at idle, not when revving?

Pff the valve noise seems to get louder. It's almost a diesel. It got worse after I filled up the oil to the Max. I only added 100-200 ml of 20w50 special break in oil. To valves tend to get loosener after a rebuilt?

It uses almost no oil at all. I drove 400 miles after the rebuilt and it used maybe Max 50ml.

And another extra link of the noise:

I did a new measurement of the valve clearance and they are as follow (in mm):

Specs: Intake: 0.19 - 0.29 mm
Exhaust: 0.39 - 0.40 mm

Intake:
1: 0.30
2: 0.27
3: 0.32
4: 0.34
5: 0.32
6: 0.34
7: 0.36
8: 0.33
9: 0.36
10: 0.36
11: 0.38
12: 0.37

Exhaust
1: 0.42
2: 0.45
3: 0.50
4: 0.50
5: 0.47
6: 0.56
7: 0.53
8: 0.53

So especially some from the intake are way out! About 0.12 difference at max.

No.
When valve seats and/or faces wear, the clearance tightens up, and when the cam lobe and/or bucket and/or valve stem tip and/or cam bearings wear they get looser.
Toyota has amazing engines with extremely little valve wear & clearance change over their entire life, so your changes, if they are that, is NFG.

Sorry i don't get what you mean with NFG ;)

Did you manage to get down the Blacktop VVT cam gear? I've put a inquiry on amayama and its been more than a week with no updates.

didn't change the cam gear yet.

I know the price is about $325 new OEM Toyota, but not through anayama.

I've adjusted the valve clearances and the noise is still a bit there, but it's a lot less noisy. I don't here it in the cabin anymore! This is the remaining noise: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZmlfss6mIE. But also take a not that this is on break-in oil, not the the 'normal' oil.
