20v dizzy relocation - running backwards
Lads, my BT 20v conversion uses a relocation kit that relocates the complete dizzy to the front. Hence it runs backwards.
Now this has been pointed out to me by a number of folk and the fact it could account for my lower than expected up top performance. One of the lads on the site had a similar problem to me with the same setup. He installed another dizzy base in the rear of the engine (original spot) and moved the wires back there while leaving the relocation kit at the front to simply do the spark distribution. This made a massive difference.
I also note SamQ's relocation kit leaves the dizzy base at the back of the head in its original spot.
So, has anyone had similar issues? I opened a standard dizzy (thanks biziryan, sound lad) and I can see there's an inner collar and the shape is very specific , turning the wrong way surely isn't ideal.
I've tried everything else so next thing to do is get the dizzy base biziryan have me in to the back of the head in its original spot. What do you think ?

I can tell you that the magnetic sensor pickups in the distributor don't much care which way the distributor turns they simply sense the teeth as they pass.
There might be an issue with tooth timing though and this would affect the ignition timing throughout the rev range.
Are you able to set the idle ignition timing ?
Can you verify the ignition timing at high revs and under load ? (would need to be done on a dyno)

If you look on the 20v dizzy there are 2 pickups. The inner most one has like a scroll on it that I believe builds up a pulse and then there's a slight lip. I'm writing this from memory and without much knowledge of how this all works. Anyways , my dizzy runs backwards and I guess Toyota made the inner scroll / ring that way for a reason.

Granted the outer pickup is on a multi toothed wheel and it doesn't look like that would matter , running one way or the other.

I am guessing one ring is cam position and the other crank position.

Right, what I am trying to get at might be better explained by the following pics.

In these pics you will see the kit I have, the insides of a 20V dizzy and the pickups (3 in total, 2 working on the inner collar and one on the 24 tooth collar). The inner collar has a grove in it that gets wider as it turns and then suddenly ends. It is this collar that interests me and the fact that with my engine this is turning opposite to the way it should.

Why is there a grove like this in the collar?

Just to complete this, I ended up getting another dizzy and running it at the back of the head. i.e just running it for the pickups (the spark distribution continued to be done at the front using the garage annex kit). In this position it turns the correct way and the car ran much better. The car is now sold but for anyone looking after, don't run the garage annex kit as they designed. use it to distribute the sparks but run another dizzy at the rear with no cap or rotor arm.
