Hello All,
I have a 1990 Corolla GT-S with the 4AGE 16V engine in it. My starter decided to crap the bed and I am just wondering which other toyota family of engines I could use a starter out of? Or am I stuck with using one from this engine only?
Sorry if this question has been asked a million times before, but the search function wasn't very helpfull and I need this car going ASAP.
Thanks for any help,
Tye

hello my friend! a starter rellocation will save you..find a 4afe starter and rear end clutch plate from 4afe and relocate her on the intake side

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure what the advantage to putting the starter on the intake side (other than heat) is, but that seems like too much work for me at this time.
I can assure you though, the failure of this starter has nothing to do with heat.

hello mate...the 80% of the failure of our starter is heat!heat destroys the starter contacts....with time.... the other 20% is electrical i think....but it can be fixed with some relay

Starters can normally be easy rebuild as far as i know. That would save you money and then you know you have a 100% good item.

I went to the local pick n pull over the weekend and lo and behold, there was a GT-S there with a mostly unmolested engine compartment
Unbelievable, as I have learned over the years of owning this car that they are very rare.
Also, some research has taught me that MR2's share this engine.
Thanks for the replies, the intake side starter swap will not be happening anytime soon though

I like the idea of relocating the starter to the intake side... makes me glad that I have a 4A-FE to start out with in my wagon. I've been planning to keep the 4A-FE starter right where it is under the intake manifold. I'm hoping with making my own engine harness (and a Megasquirt ECU) that I will have more room to get to it, since there will be fewer sensors and I can locate the engine harness wherever it is best for working on the engine.
