OIL STARVATION

Postby YOTAHOLIC808 » Sat Jan 25, 2014 10:52 am

Planning a big $$ build here soon and I am in need of some advice. I understand that oil starvation is a problem in high performance high RPM engines so I will be taking all the neccessary precautions!but I would like to steer clear of the Drysump setup because I will not be pushing this engine to such extremes! I have done a good amount of searching and reading through numerous 4AGE related forums and with some advice from dr.occa I have come up with a list of possible Oil System Upgrades.

Baffle Kit http://twosrus.com/catalog/product_info ... cts_id=889 But cant find any reviews..

Windage Screen/Scraper Unit http://www.crank-scrapers.com/Toyota_4a.html

and Accusump setup https://www.cantonracingproducts.com/pr ... -NO-VALVE/

It seems as the Accusump setup is pretty common and I have found a few detailed write ups on it.

I would like to here some advice and see some setups you guys are running ! Thanks!

You have a pretty good plan.
How fast do you plan on spinning it?
What are your power goals?
You might consider beefing up your oil pump gear.

I am not sure if it's necessary but I have heard of people shimming the oil pump to get a little more pressure to the bearings.
If you plan on running ARP head bolts search for threads talking about oil starvation to the head. The oil passage that travels through one of the bolt holes has been known to get blocked off by the ARP bolt and starve the head. There are a few different ways you can safeguard this.

Let me know what other parts you plan on getting and I'll put together a quote for you. With a big order I can almost always beat any prices you will find shopping around.
I also just picked up Hasselgren and can get parts such as pistons, cranks, rods, cams and a number of other things. Their block reinforcement is also fairly affordable.
I don't have access to Canton parts but I can get the Moroso equivalent if you are interested.
I can also get a high capacity oil pan if you are interested.

If you shim the oil pump for more pressure that means even less oil would be left in the pan. If the pump flows the same amount, but at a higher pressure, our already small reserve of oil will get sucked up into the motor.

Have you looked into increasing the capacity of the pan? There is also a good DIY write up on here for a full flow oil cooler setup that replaces the flow limited oem setup.

Shimming the pump will have no effect on how much oil is in the pan. You also can't flow the same amount at a higher pressure unless you added more restriction. More pressure also means more volume flowing through the motor.

Brain fart, I lumped pressure and volume together.
