I've been talking to Patrick Seto over at MFactory about making an even taller 5th gear than the 0.733 that they currently offer. I'm wanting to rebuild my T50 again but this time with the TRD close ratio gear set and the tallest 5th gear possible for the absolute minimum rpms when I'm on the highway. I've got a 5.375 final drive, which dramatically increases the size of my Silvertops balls but is killing it on the highway. I really want to go to US Air drift days next year, but that track is over 500 miles away. I currently cruise at 5000rpm to tracks that are up to 75 miles away and it is not pleasant. If a 0.600 5th gear is possible I could drop down to 3500rpm, but I'd really like to get down to 3000rpm.

Here's where I and anyone else who is interested currently stand in terms of making the tallest 5th gear possible happen. It's an email that I received from Patrick on 9/3/14.

Hello Jon,

I just had a chance to run this over with the production manager and we exchanged a few notes on this project and he originally wanted a minimum order quantity of FIFTY SETS.

Although the AE86 is a popular car (I have one myself) it's just not as popular as the urban legend suggests, in the GEARING market. I was able to negotiate the proposed deal and reduce it down to 25 sets instead.

The price would have to remain at $320.00 plus shipping to their final destination.

50% deposit will have to be made before the project will actually begin.

In that time, I can make inquiries as to what the tallest possible ratio is as we have produced a tall first gear previously and also have the OEM 5th in hand.

The current lead time if all deposits are made by the end of this month is 60 to 90 BUSINESS days.

If I did the calculator right at 3000 rpm you'd be going 85
so like 2700 would be 70ish
1400 would be 65

it'd probably feel crazy sluggish under hard accel in 5th gear at normal highway speed if you're trying to speed up... thats just a guess tho. well with a stockish 16v if you're pushing over 160hp+ or so it might not be so bad

OH RIGHTTT. I have 205/50r15 as my tire size

Make sure you input your tire size on the calculator as well since that can make a big difference. I'm going to buy a set of 215/85/16 Firestones just for the rear so long as it looks like I can actually cram them in my wheel wells. I'll just roll them on the highway when I have to drive over 500 miles to the track.

If I can fit those tires as opposed to my 195/50/15's then my rpm will drop from 5000 to 3700 at 74mph. That's before changing out the factory 5th gear for a custom one and still running my 5.375 final drive.

Do you know specifically what the gear ratio will be for this group buy
product? I think we may have a better chance of obtaining more interested buyers if we dont make it the tallest possible, because I believe most people dont have a 5.375 final, but we should definitely make it lower than the old ratio of 0.733

Initially Patrick is thinking that they can at least make a 0.690, but beyond that clearances are going to become questionable. If this project happens they will determine the tallest possible. For me personally I'm just all about making the 5.375 final more practical since it's totally awesome at the track and readily available at MFactory. I haven't ever ridden in another 86 but my SIlvertop runs a Blacktop ECU with T3 velocity stacks, T3 lightweight pullies, an OBX header with an HKS exhaust, other than that it's stock and it spins 195/50/15 Yokohama S.drives nicely in 3rd gear.

As I understand it, the problem with this custom project and the reason for needing so many orders is because of the tooling that has to be made to create the custom 5th gear. So I assume it will be possible to make these custom 5th gears in the future but I'd have to verify with Patrick on that. My point being, it would be nice if the 5.375 final was more practical to drive to places with because it's a totally awesome upgrade that gives the 4ag a noticeable leverage increase over the rear tires when it comes to spinning them. Either way my rpms are stilling going to be high in 5th but hopefully with the tallest possible it will be reasonable for long distance driving on 195/50/15's. Maybe then after I combine it with the tallest tires possible I'll really be able to drive great distances, like over 500 miles to the track.

No, I give up. Not a whole lot of people running the 5.375 final drive so it's hard to get enough people to want such an extremely tall 5th gear. MFactory already offers a tall 5th gear option which is suitable for anyone running the much more popular 4.778 final drive. I'm just going to go ahead and swap back to my OEM 4.3 final drive and eventually sell the TRD 5.375.

Yes that is true. But another production run is in the works right as I type this.
