I've been looking into this and RX8 6 speeds are plentiful and very cheap. How similar/dissimilar is the RX8 6 speed from the J160?

Is it possible to install the gear lever kit on the RX8 gearbox?

RX8 gearbox seems like the best way to go for the North American market. They are as cheap as $400 USD on ebay buy it now.

Cheers,

Carthik

The RX8 gearbox is nearly the same as the Miata version... the only real difference is the tail housing on the RX8 is shorter, and the shifter placement makes modifying the tunnel almost the same job as it is for the J160 version.

So... to answer the first part of your question... as long as the RX8 trans looks like the one in the photo... YES , our adapter will fit it. To answer your second question, the shifter kit we manufacture only fits the J160 because the J160 has an area we can mount the shifter too (the original shifter mounting holes). The tail housing for the RX8 is different, and so our shifter doesn't fit...

With that said... the RX8 shifter location will be similar placement as it is in my car... the tunnel will need to be modified, but overall it should work!

Believe it or not.... Generation 3 has arrived! Tough to believe but LEEN has finished the 3rd production run on this, the newest version now fits ALL AZ6 transmissions. :o :o :o

As we all learned above... RX8* versions of the AZ6 are selling for as little as $400... add our adapter, move your shifter hole back to about where mine and Jesse's is... and for under $2500 (LESS then the cost of a rebuilt T50 w TRD gears!) you can be rowing 6 speeds instead of 5....

RX8 6 spd... - 3.760 2.269 1.645 1.187 1.000 0.843
T50 OEM.... - 3.587 2.022 1.384 1.00 0.861
T50TRD1.... - 2.341 1.607 1.195 1.00 0.886 - (pricey set - about $2000)
T50TRD2.... - 2.630 1.891 1.384 1.00 0.861 - (cheaper set - about $1400)

As of now there is no reason we shouldn't be able to deliver... As far as production examples... C.A.D. is a lovely thing... :D LEEN plugs in their specifics, and out pop finished components. I believe the longest wait do far was a client who waited 6 weeks.

Typically... payment is made, and 2 to 4 weeks later we send you a notice of shipment.

Thanks. I was just concerned there isn't enough interest to warrant continuing production.

What you might not realize... is this adapter also opens up Toyota engine swaps into the MX5... imagine if you will a 270hp, 10,000 rpm Miata on the track............ :o :o

Are there any plans to build a shifter setup for the RX8 transmission for those of us that wouldn't want to cut our tunnel or console?

I'd also be interested if they made the gear lever kit for the RX-8 transmission. Without it, it would probably be too close to the hand brake lever.

As of now there still isn't a relocated shifter available for the RX8 version of the AZ6.

Concerning your other point..... I shortened mine by about 1 3/4"

UPDATE:

As if this couldn't get ANY easier.... Joe has done some research....

email from LEEN wrote:Hi Dan,

The OEM Toyota clutch disk with the spline pattern to match the J160 gearbox.

200mm OD: Toyota Part No.: 31250-28142

212mm OD: Toyota Part No.: 31250-28122

These absolutely definitely fit.

LEEN

You now have OEM Toyota discs to fit your swap.....

Dumb question.

How about an FR-S transmission into an AE86??

Not so dumb......... ;)

The cost of an FR-S version of the AZ6 is still too expensive to see if the bolt pattern is the same... or not. It... MAY match the bolt pattern, right now the only ones who actually know that are the Aisin, Subaru, and Toyota engineers... The FR-S version does have one significant advantage over the J160... the FR-S version has a reverse lockout that the J160 does not. :!:

Quick question for those that have installed the J160 in the AE86:

I got the geabox mounting bracket from Joe@Leen but there is no poly bushing to be installed between the gearbox and the mount.

How did you get around this? Without a bushing the friction between the gearbox metal & the mounting bracket will be an issue.

Thx

Got any photos?? In my install I used the OEM J160 rubber mount, but I also built my own cross member

The OEM T50 mount fits entirely differently, as your shop says it will not work. I believe the W58 mount MAY fit... not sure but have heard a few rumors to that affect

I've not had contact with Joe for about 4 months, and a short time ago the LEEN webpage and Facebook page were taken down.
