I'll admit it, I got into AE86's because of Initial D but I'm not stupid enough to go try and drift it thinking I'm Takumi (I've been through that phase when I was 12), that's what Nissan s13's are for XD

I don't bag on people because of their driving genres. Wether it be drag, grip, or drift, it is easy to tell the difference between those who make an effort to make the car look good and those who just want it to run and don't care about looks. (Aka the whole, "I drive a missile daily but have no other car.") Wether or not it's a corolla, when you see an ugly car you see an ugly car. What's under the hood or even chassis-wise goes unnoticed when you're driving about. All you can see is the outside and when it's done poorly, it's an eyesore.

I don't think they give gold stars to those who try but come up short... It's for those that succeed.

And we wanna have a good time. And that's what we are gonna do.

I guess I don't mind knock off wheels, it has the potential to get damaged so there is no point in me spending good money for some wheels. I can spend it somewhere else, brake fluid, brake pads, rotors, engine oil, tires, fuel, event fee's and all other wear and tear items that need to be replaced regularly for track events add up; so no I cant justify spending 2k on wheels when I have all the other stuff I gotta get to first. But hey if you got the money to drop on some nice authentic wheels, more power to you. I have owned real volk racing te37's before, it made me to paranoid owning a wheel that was worth more than my car lol. The thing is everyone does it differently, I respect the grassroots driver cause 90% of us are on that scale.

These old chassis are also not very forgiving on parts, so its definitely a test of time. The owners who are passionate will hold on to these and restore them while the other kids or tuners move on to newer chassis.

There are more, and somewhere amongst these established genres there is
a place for the restoration and modification of Japanese cars old and new.
Your car is yours to do what you like with... but where does anyone get the
authority to start telling other people that what they are doing with their car
is wrong ??

I like cars fullstop :) I admire the efforts that people put into restoring classic
cars. I respect the engineering that goes into building dragsters and the
imagination that makes one hotrod look more "right" than another. I can
appreciate the perfection of top oval track and grand prix cars. Rally, drift,
slammed and bagged... I love to see it done well.

But I also leave room to admire the kid who teaches himself about cars by
pulling apart some $500 shitter and rebuilds it with parts from the junkyard
and gets it running. That grin when the engine fires up for the first time is
priceless !! And if he can't afford $2K for panel and paint, and drives around
with different coloured doors with patches of primer, that doesn't bother me.

And if he buys a cheap set of knock-off mags to replace the steel rims and
skinny tires, then I know that he wants his car to look good. So I don't bag
him for that. And you know why ? Because I used to be that kid ;)

Cheers... jondee86

^^ That is the truth. I dont even know why this thread exists. Let people do what they want with their cars. Just care about your car and stop getting butthurt about what some else is doing lol.

I take pride in the things I do, your version of pride could be totally different from mine,... In the end when I see someone who has the same style of car as mine or what I envision then I say cool.... If it's not my style, then that's their sense of pride. As long as it's not dangerous, I won't say a word

That feeling when you see a teenager buys a great condition ae86 just to use it as a "drift missile" and ends up in a trench, upside down. :x :( :x :(

then you have the new Gen ae86 owners... no comment.. (for ex.. Club4ag facebook) disaster..

good reminder IMO. I just bought my second 86, it's been a while since my last. I felt like it was pretty pricey considering the condition it's in. But this thread reminds me that its all about the car, I chose to buy an 86. Not because it was the best choice, but because I wanted one. I was starting to get down on myself for not picking a nice clean one and just saving up a little more, but this thread reminds me i just bought a classic. If i bought a '69 SS Camaro in similar condition it would have been 3-4 times more expensive, because those are pretty hard to find (especially a true SS). You wouldnt rush a build or buy cheesy crap parts for that kind of car. Well its only a matter of time until the 86 is of the same status i think. Now i gotta just be patient and build it the right way with REAL parts and i'll eventually have a rare gem. thanks for reminding me that i'm already lucky, and i should treat my car accordingly.

^ Well put.

I'm not going to go as far as to talk trash on people who put cheap replica parts on their car. I'll just quietly do my own thing. Even if it means waiting longer to amass funds or acquire hard-to-find items.

I'd recommend only TRD,TEC-ART, or HKS parts, things of good quality and prestige.
