went to the dmv already was 600 plus for 3 years!

2-3 months in late registration the fees are not that high as you mentioned. But I was a year behind once and it was quite expensive. I think I had to pay over $200 to get the tags. Youre talking years? Its going to be fairly expensive.

Actual registration fees for renewal isn't that high for older cars, however, initial registration includes sales/local taxes that run up a very high late penalty charges that can be hundreds of dollars.
If you go to the DMV office, sometimes this can be negotiated so that cars coming out of non-ops or have not been tagged since the last owner released the interest on the vehicle. It is typical that they will discount anything more than 3 years, when this is more than 5-6 years since last tags.
