With the recent discussion threads I've been seeing here I remembered watching a MotorTrend challenge pitting a Fair Lady against a new 370Z (here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VRnBKfPOvw). I wondered whether or not the AE86 could compete against a FRS/BRZ (without the aid of Eurobeat). What would a challenge look like? A couple scenarios come in mind:

- Tuned AE86 (total investment less than or equal to price of FRS/BRZ vs the new kid (stock)
- Both cars tuned

Possible ground rules? Must have same engine family which came with car? No forced induction?

I imagine that logistically, this would be more easily accessible to conduct a fair shootout in California with its aftermarket suppliers and number of racetracks. I would say, let the community vote on the rules, cars, venue, trials, and drivers. Of course someone needs to videotape it and post it up on Youtube so the community may enjoy.

Just a thought.

"total investment less than or equal to the price of a new FRS/BRZ" Man if I dropped 26 grand into an AE86 race car build, a stick FRS wouldn't stand a chance in any circumstances lol.

Still, twould be real neat to see. Never happen in my neck of the woods, all FRS' belong to douchey internet fanboys and the BRZ's go to old hipsters, and all the AE86's are in other states lol.

my car has 170hp and is 2200#s, the FRS has 200hp and is 2700#s(?)

stock BRZ/FRS run 1/4 mile in 15.2 to 15.5 seconds at anywhere from 89.9 to 91 mph... My car ran a 15.77 @ 88.9 with the old 5 speed, and a 3.58 final drive... I'm now running a 6 speed and a 3.91

I'm not quite up to $26,000... but I'm very close to $20k...

edit - PIR is about 10 miles from my house... it is a 2 mile road course where the long front straight works as a drag strip...

you are mixing up cars.... the one for sale is absolutely stock.... and is my wife's....

mine is a wee bit different... my AE86... is actually an AE71

@carbd7age, I'd love to see what 20k can do on the track. Although the frs is fairly light by today's standard, it's still packing plenty of mass. Not saying a little hachi roku can win on that quality alone. It's just something to consider. I would love to see something organized like the Nissan guys did. Very respectful to both generations of automobiles.

I think a Toyota-engine-only rule should apply, you could swap an S2000 engine and handle an FRS down the straights handily. Still a BEAMS swap is also super powerful...

There are already time trial series for frs and ae86 It's been going on for year or so.

Both cars would definitely have to be tuned to a equal level. 20-25k into an AE86 with a 1uz or Beams would be 2-3x faster than a stock FRS/BRZ.

With both cars tuned it would make it some what more of an even choice, and the weight of an AE86 could play a big roll, but like that video of the 240Z vs the 370Z it's not the only key point.

It would be amazing to watch though!
