What do you love about the 86?

Postby Clouds » Thu Oct 31, 2013 6:28 am

I wanted to find something that I thought would be interesting to talk about for my first post. I have been reading posts for a month or two now and I just made my account. So tell me what you love about the AE86.
There shouldn't be a day that goes by where you don't learn something new.

It doesn't have alot of hp but it's incredibly fun to drive. And it's boxy styling offcourse, but i like most cars from that era.

I echo that.

While I have, and have cars that are MUCH faster than the corolla, there is something about driving the ae86 that really makes you feel like you are driving and one with the car and one with the road. No pesky electronic bits interfacing you to the ground, just the mechanical components that you can feel through your hands, feet, back, and ass :)

Its just fun. Plain and simple. Some people will not understand why one would drive this car over another that has 3x the power.... unless they owned one.

Styling, Rarity, Uniqueness, the "underdog" approach in the car scene. Love it all.

Assuming you are talking about the original AE86. It's easy to work on and a challenge to drive. I've owned MANY MANY MANY cars(R32, R30, S14, S13, S15, C31, C34, A31, etc etc etc), but have never driven anything that came close to the enjoyment I get out of driving my 86. She doesn't have the power that a turbo car has to get you around the big bends sideways, so you gotta make up for it by heading into turns ballsout and using the momentum to carry you through. Nothing beats having your foot floored on the gas hearing the motor sing and smelling the mix of gas and rubber in the air, and the sound of mayhem in the air.

Can the same thing be said about the new 86 imposter? I think not, cause they are faggy

The fact that I was there when these cars were newly intro'ed in late 1983. A new SR trimmed AE86 cost $4k and a 4AGE equipped GT was around $6.5k. And I test drove one SR.... hence I luuuuv them.... just that test drive. :D

We used to visit family in Japan during the summer months when I was a kid. I used to love seeing the car commercials in Japan. I remember seeing Corolla, Supra, and Silvia commercials and dreaming.

I love how I stand out like a sore thumb in my parking lot at work against a bunch of late-model, high-end, yuppie POS cars and SUVs.

I love my corolla because I built it from the ground up. I know every inch of my car. I know exactly what bolts were replaced, needs to get replaced and the places it needs bolts =) If that makes any sense. I love the smell of the oil burning, coolant leaking, tire burning, side mirror shaking, tie rods clunking, horn not working, check engine lighting, brake lights not working, privacy cover dropping, starter not starting and everything else in between.

I love that you can get stuck on the side of the freeway and just camp out till the tow truck gets there and eat a burrito with friends.

These things and experiences can never be bought. It is earned.

I love the ergonomics, just love how I'm positioned in the car. Shifter feels right, pedals, steering etc. But what I love most about the 86, is the priceless smile I get every time I get to drive mine.

My ae86 is a great source of abstinence. All the sex I want but I can't get. Rolling around in my 84 with the windows down hollering at girls but they ain't looking at me.

I love how spunky the car feels no matter how slow you are actually driving.

What I meant was the FD3 styling is also impressive, technical and stylish for it's time much like the 86.

FD started in 1992 in Japan but was introduced here in the states in 93. I miss mine :(
