The wait is real.
Re: the never ending story...
it certainly is.
I lied, because I forgot. I have this little side project going as well. im tired of fogged up windows, and having a heater core with a 20v swap sucks. saw n article years ago about someone modding a standard home space heater to fit in place of the core. now that Im tired of either not driving it when it rains(aka when its fun), or when its cold, I finally decided to tackle this...
found a car space heater, rather small but efficient, and it plugs into the cig lighter. perfect, plus the dimensions are nearly the same as the oem heater core, just the thickness is a bit much. considering that theres a small fain in the unit, I figured I could make it work.
so I took the heater apart(Schumacher #1224) and did the same for the vent control box. with all the dust that accumulates, I figured I would replace all the seam sealing foam that's deteriorated, with some new adhesive backed neoprene foam.
heres the start...
almost apart...
this is some of the foam stuff, falls apart just from looking at it, you can see the dust on the counter...
now im getting somewhere, this is starting to look promising...
damn near perfect!
I removed the fan, cut the back half of the housing thin, and now to extend the wires a bit...
now I know some will say; "that's a car fire waiting to happen." or "that wont do anything." and "youre wasting your time." but after testing the unit, it puts out a decent amount of heat, and it has 2 temp settings. the heating element will also be contained in the original housing with modifications only to the back half where the fan was. plus, keep in mind, this isn't for a luxurious temperature to drive this throughout the winter...its for defrosting the windshield and possibly raising the temp a bit for those frosty drives in the north east mountains. stay tuned for more updates after the holidays.

Re: the never ending story...
Are you just plugging it into the cig lighter or are you going to hard wire it in? I think you could definitely get that to work with the factory switch and that would look and be awesome. Obviously fan speed isn't something you could change but you could also wire the different temperature setting switch up to the fan speed switch instead. Anyway, awesome idea man! I love when people take something and make it functional and factory looking!
Re: the never ending story...
Keep us posted as to how effective the heater works defrosting the windshield. Did you tie the heater into an idle-up circuit?

Re: the never ending story...
for now im going to set it up and keep it powered by the cig lighter. if it works well, I think I want to wire in another 12v outlet, and keep it hidden in the glovebox where the controls will be. I have been looking, not very hard, for the oem idle-up to see if I can get something to work with that.

all heater parts are back in the car for now, winter storage time.
bought this from Deuce Cam the other day, Martelius group A manifold in 409 stainless steel. plan is to extend it 12" so I don't need a test pipe, then get it coated. once I get a free day where its not 10 degrees, ill pull my old stuff off and start getting this prepped. rather excited to start, and get this mated to the Brave cat back.

I hope to follow in your footsteps, this car is perfect. I see that I ended up getting your old ITBs haha
Re: the never ending story...
thanks, not sure if I remember what ITBs youre talking about though, maybe an old set of BTs I sold a while back?
beautiful weather out this weekend finally so, out with this full OBX stuff...
---------------
getting ready for filter relocation and some gauging
---------------
its a nice view from under here...
---------------
...here too. that O2 flange needs to go though
---------------
but this is a problem. how to fix it??? (notice the steering shaft)
---------------
with this as a spacer, simple.
sv3 power exhaust flange
---------------
yes!!!
---------------
after this test fitment I took the manifold back out. chopped off that O2 flange to mount it lower. also chopped off the outlet flange to stretch it so theres no test pipe needed. contemplating the way im going to tackle the outlet flange. now it has a quick transition from 2" to 58mm to mate to the Brave, so I might expand the pipe I weld on in between so its not such a drastic change.

Re: the never ending story...
thanks.
progress since the last post. received the spacer/flange and it fits perfect. extended the outlet flange to the CBE, flared the outlet to mate to the CBE, moved the O2 flange/port to the merge pipe, ported the manifold openings to match the spacer/flange, closed up the hole from the old O2 location. threw it all in a box and dropped it off at the coaters last week. should have it back shortly.

I gotta admit, I've read through your entire build at least 7-8 times already and it's inspirational. Great work. That color - my favorite. Car sounds awesome too. Keep at it till the end of days mate!

Yo morgan whats up dude? How you like the header after having it a while now?
Re: the never ending story...
How is the brave exhaust?
Debating between brave vs HKS sport.
I have a header but I think I am missing the front pipe and cat before the catback. Anyone know where I can get one? Does the brave include it?

Re: the never ending story...
Im very happy with the setup currently. I eliminated the cat by extending the downpipe of the manifold. The Brave is a catback, so its 2 pieces

I don't understand why you can't use heater core with 20v swap?

I tried a half dozen cores. All clogged or leaking. The few valves i had were tight and i broke a few cables too. I gave up and tried updating it, yet im still to have hooked power to the heater

Re: the never ending story...
Thanks for the reply man. Not to beat a dead horse I'm just still a little confused..
Are you using 16v cores? Seems strange that they would all clog or leak.. Are these new or used?

Re: the never ending story...
yes, ae86 cores. usually the inlet and/or outlets were cracked or crushed. I was never successful at "saving" one. also had others that leaked elsewhere, making for a nice mess in the cabin. I got tired of the nonsense and didn't have luck finding new ones, so I tried this.

Long overdue for an update, but not much has really changed. just driving and enjoying the car for the most part. big update recently though, acquired a set of wheels that I've been after for 10 years or so, by way of a wedding present from an amazing friend. they needed some love...lots of that actually. After a serious cleaning, buffing, & polishing, this is what we have. New lip & centercap decals are on the way from Barrel Bros, and the centercaps that I designed, should be done in a week or so.

Thanks for the kind words everyone, its been a while since posting. The casablancas have had center caps finished & put on.
There have been a few updates...
1 - Took a Goodline rep front bumper and made it zenki. Wanted something a bit more aggressive, and it came out just right. Decided to remove the side vents as well. This was my first fiberglass project, I impressed myself.
2 - Then I pulled the trigger on an oem rear visor, always wanted one of these!
3 - been hoarding old wheels as well, there's more than pictured...I might have a problem.
