And this is how it is for me... the challenge of doing things that initially seemed
beyond my ability; the hours of researching, studying, learning and eventually turning
that knowledge into something that works... THAT is the the rewarding part for me.
Once the project is complete, like all new toys, it is can be enjoyed for a while, but
soon my interest begins to wane because that journey is over and I need to start on
another. Fresh is best as they say in the supermarket business :)

The AE86 is a great car for modifying because the technology is basic. In the 1980's
it was competing and winning in race and rally, but technology marches on and now it
would be blown away by any of the current crop of "hot hatches". And I'm getting older
as well, so time to go for something more modern that already has all the good stuff.

And I know that BMW's have a bit of a rep for having problems and being expensive
to repair. I factored that into my buying decision, but when you see how little you pay
in this country for a used 335i from Japan, I couldn't not own one for a while.

NOOOOO!!!!!!

Haha... Great build Jondee, sad to see you move onto something newer but I completely understand. I wish you the best of luck on your journey with your new car. Also, thank you for all the help you gave me when I needed it. Hopefully you will still be lurking around on these forums and helping people out.

Thanks

I totally get your logic and understand your viewpoint
but this....
AE86 is a great car for modifying because the technology is basic. In the 1980's
it was competing and winning in race and rally, but technology marches on and now it
would be blown away by any of the current crop of "hot hatches"

Track or stock AE, but not a moded street AE. We are talking street (BMW), right ?
5spd 1.6 ran 10sec 1/4s from late 90s. Can 60-0 100ft with or without 'big brakes'.
Dial in suspension to your satisfaction for anything a public road throws at you
Keep your power steering and AC. Fit the perfect seats. Excellent audio very inexpensive diy. New hot hatch who?? :)

Cousin had three identical silver 4cyl 4dr BMW ~2008 models in his shop at once! I asked if he had some fleet contract.
One was coils, one a leaking coolant hose(wierd & expensive - I'm sure design was deliberate).
Last one had some wierd electric? water pump issue. I'm thinkin they're at low resale for a reason.

"New" has its downsides.
one neighbour import Honda ?Stream. Wasn't aware of direct injection & CVT tranny.
Injection leak frustrations led him to literally give the car away! Horrible mileage. Ran beautifully tho
Another good friend usa 2016 Honda fit, also direct injection & CVT. Said mileage was worse than his full size V8 pickup
Sold it cheap, accepted 1st offer. Said he would have given it away if they'd only asked

Fair comment, but I was referring to the comparison between a showroom stock AE86
compared to the current crop of showroom stock hot hatches. Here are some figures pulled
from this article... https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/co ... ison-test/
2017 Honda Civic Type R 306hp 295tq, 0-60 5.2 sec, 13.9 @ 104 1/4, 2.0 litre
2017 Ford Focus RS 350hp 350tq, 0-60 4.5sec, 13.4 @ 103 1/4, 2.2 litre
1985 Toyota GTS 112ho 100tq, 0-60 10.5sec, 18.6 @ 79.5 1/4 (Road&Track test) 1.6 litre
2019 Peugeot 308 GTI 266hp 243tq, 0-60 5.9sec 1.6 litre
2019 Renault Mrgane RS 280hp 287tq, 0-60 5.8sec, 1.8 litre

And yes, direct injection has its share of problems, and the 335i is no exception. Luckily
my car has had a mechanical warranty since it was imported and that paid for two new
turbos when the waste gate pivots flogged out. While it was in the shop for that work the
PO installed new injectors and plugs, and replaced the most prone to leaking gaskets.

To be honest I wouldn't pay a lot of money for any BMW. Only I wanted to see why the BMW
community is so active and if the tuning potential for the N54 engine is as great as all the
youtube videos make out. I'm going to do a few basic bolt-ons plus the MHD tune and see
how it feels. This car will be a DD for as long as it lasts :)

Thanks for the kind words :) They say you never forget your first love and although
I don't have an AE86 any more I will still be cruising the forums for a while. Change is
inevitable... sometimes it is good and sometimes it is bad. Forums are still the best
place to gain information and exchange ideas, and the AE86 is still a great vehicle to
start learning about the basics of building and driving an old school classic.

Excellent support & info on those BMs should definitely make ownership enjoyable

didn't think a stock GTS could ever run mid 18s. Something must be wrong with that tested sample. TVIS? Mid 16s the norm
Still slow, but thats why club4ag exists. Faster is what we gearheads do. Car makers just took 20+ years to catch up
Beauty of modding is u custom tailor every aspect to suit/fit you personally. A $50k new hot hatch won't or can't

I like those cool lookin custom guage displays tho, and don't seem too far off so we can run a panel in our old relics

Tiptronic is nice, but never found anything lacking in a 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic transmission, for a road car tbh
An old donkey 2.3L sohc 2 valve ford 2800 pound street car has excellent response from a $200 used holset turbo . High 30s mpg. ~6700 rpm redline. Runs 10sec 1/4s, traps 125mph in 3rd gear.
Where the fk are manufacturers going with these 7, 8 & 10 speed jobs ?? ...but then again these are the very same morons who program sounds to come thru the speakers to emulate engine noises! What assholes

My dream peoject is actually a last gen celica, sat onto an ae86 chasis. 1UZ + 240sx 5 spd box. Proper staggered wheels

I am happy jamming gears and this is a country that was very slow to adopt
the "new" idea of putting automatic transmissions into non-luxury cars. What
I really wanted was a sequential box that was suitable for a road car. I looked
at pretty much every sequential on the market, but they are all dog boxes,
and I wouldn't put a dog box in a car that is 98% for road use.

I figured the next best thing would be tiptronic :)

Hahaha... I used to think that too :) But there was a man who had been nagging
me to sell him the car for the last couple of years. I knew he would pay a good
price and that was in the back of my mind. The BM was an impulse buy and when
I lost some of my garage space I suddenly had too many cars.

I had to decide where I really wanted to go with my automotive interests, and as
the AE86 had reached the endpoint of where I planned to go with it, I decided to
let it go to a good home. As I pointed out above, it's the journey that is important,
not the endpoint. Now I have a new toy that is radically different to an AE86 and
hopefully will be just as much fun.

Gave the "New 86" a run this weekend and it was four seconds faster than the old one.

Handles and brakes really well for a 1700kg lump, so still possible to have fun even
if its not an AE. And great sound syctem too, so I could cruise home after the event
with the window down, vintage reggae cranking, happy and feeling LIFE IS GOOD :D

Grats.

I can understand the draw on the ISF. The exhaust note is unreal with the right setup. :)

Sure the new toy will provide. If you tinker with it throw it up in the build logs here again. Be interesting to see how you work through electrical vs mechanical challenges.

I'm hoping that there won't be much in the way of electrical problems. I don't
really want to get involved with figuring out CAN-BUS issues !!! At the moment
I have a Stage 1 MHD engine tune and a Stage 3 XHP transmission tune installed,
and I will probably only install a couple of bolt-ons so I can move up to a Stage 1+
MHD tune (famous last words.. I know :D ).

Induction noise and loud exhaust is great for a while but it is nice to have a car
that doesn't shout LOOK AT ME!!! So for now I have no interest in modifying the
exhaust or intake system in any way that would make them louder. I like being
able to listen to music while I drive :)

Had to get at least a quick electrical jab in there since it's a BMW.

"The brake light died and took out the ecu..."

As someone with a straight piped 4" to 5" exhaust inline 6, I can understand. Even the ....ing wastegate goes to atmosphere.
The car is black and I do have a radio though. Still doesn't really do "subtle"

Enjoy being invisible for a while. :D

Wow!! I haven't been on the forum for ages and missed this build. Bloody good job mate. Sounds great. Shame you let it go. Where did it end up over here in Oz?

Current build for the feral will be using a twinscrew, I've loved my turbo aw11's since 2002 and my twinchargers since 2007, but wanted to try something different.
Been running a little eaton m45 in the twincharger since 2015 (might be 2016) and it's a great little blower being fed with a gt2871r 28psi total boost. Version 4 or 5 twincharger i'm up to. haha

New build which i only picked up the block from a deck skim today will have a amg c32 v6 merc twinscrew bolted on top of it. Got it cheap as it had a munted clutch and thought why not.... haha.

Thanks for the kind words. The car is in Brisbane with the AE86 collector. I've read
some of your build info... always like to see people doing something different. That
was the main reason I went with the twinscrew... at the time I couldn't find anyone
who had done that on an AE86, and that made it a challenge :)

If I was able to build a race car I would have gone with the next size up Sprintex, but
since I had to keep the AE as a road car the smaller unit was a better fit. Learned a
lot from building it and had some fun along the way. Liked the idea of twincharging
as well but seemed a bit complicated at the time. Now I am content to potter around
with the twin turbo and just add a few bolt-ons to perk it up a bit.

Good luck with the new build. I'll keep an eye on Toymods.

Wasn't able to resist the urge.... had to install dual cone filters in place of the
factory airbox. Not sure that it adds much in the way of performance but it does
add a nice bit in induction growl when you have your foot up it :D

Got some different wheels as I like this style better...

Image

Put some Bridgestone RE003 tires on them and have to say they are have amazing
grip in the wet !!!! Upgraded the intercooler, flashed a MHD tune on the ECU and
an xHP transmission tune. Refreshed the suspension with Bilstein B4 factory style
shocks and struts all round for a mild handling upgrade. New brake rotors and Hawk
HPS pads. Got some M3 lower control arms still to go in for a bit more front end
bite on turn in.

Car is faster and rides better than before... feels like a brand new car now with no
downside. Puts a smile on my face every time I go for a drive... some people call
this car the German Supra, and I would not disagree :D

Took a while, but found I needed another Toyota in my life, so I now have one of these :)

Image

Used import from Japan and has a lot of miles on it so there are a few minor things that
need doing. Like converting the HDD to English so I can use most of the touch screen
functions as the previous owner did not bother. Factory audio in these is nice !!!

Has some decent HKS coilovers and a few other cosmetic touches, otherwise bone stock.

As Kenny Rogers sings... You've got to know when to hold 'em, Know when to fold 'em...
and after more than 30 years of loving my 86's the time was right to walk away. I learned
a lot from them, but as you know, you don't ever want to stop learning. So I had a fling with
a Euro car... enough to know that they were not my kind of cars. And now I am starting out
learning about another "destined to become a classic" Toyota.

Another song comes to mind... If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with.

Good luck on your journey Ace... best regards... jondee86
