Yeah, I was surprised that the GZE coils couldn't keep up with my modest tune.
They are made for a supercharged engine that runs 8psi stock, and I used them
because I thought for sure they could stretch to 15-16psi. Maybe I have bad plug
leads... I'll test them tomorrow. Or maybe spraying water-meth makes it harder
for the spark to jump the gap ?

I gapped down to 0.6mm and got some improvement, and then down to 0.5mm
and all but eliminated the misfiring. But I want to run 0.8mm and figured that
COP's would get me there. I got them off a guy who uses them on all his N/A and
boosted 4AGE builds and never had any problems with the 1NZ units. But we are
talking 20-25psi drift or road cars, not 30psi plus monsters.

The other reason I decided to change to COP's was so that I can run full sequential
fuel and ignition, and phase the injectors correctly. This is supposed to give a
smoother running engine, and I'm all for that. If the 1NZ COP's don't give me clean
ignition with an 0.8mm gap, I'll go with Plan C which is some LS smart coils :)

EDIT: Thinking about what I said above regarding phasing injectors... they are
actually already phased correctly (sequential following firing order). And even with
wasted spark ignition is essential... it has to fire each cylinder at the right time
in the correct order or the engine would not run. So no real gain with COP's fired
sequentially except that the coil only fires once every 720 deg of engine rotation.

And as far as the GZE coils go, I remember now that I powered them from the
keyswitch via the factory ignition circuit and 35 year old wiring. Could be that there
is a bit of voltage drop there that is causing the weak spark. I'll try and check that
tomorrow as well. I was planning to run a dedicated power supply for the COP's so
if need be I can install that and hook it up to the GZE coils to see if it makes any
improvement.

In order of length, the leads (OEM) test at 9.33, 8.52, 6.54 and 4.02 kOhms. This
is within the 1000 Ohms/inch of length guideline and so I call the leads good.

Now to figure out a way to test the voltage to the coil with the engine running ?

Onwards and upwards... bought the bits so gonna put them in whether they
are justified or not :) Made a start this afternoon...

Image

Cam covers are a bit scruffy but they will do the job. I might get another set
and refurbish them. But first I need to get the new wiring done and get the car
running. Passed the LVVTA Cert inspection and should have the plate affixed
to somewhere on the car in a few weeks. Usually goes on the firewall but I don't
have a lot of clear space, so will need to get creative :)

Took a while, but I finally got the COP wiring completed. I don't like having a lot
of unnecessary joins in important wires, so I bought some new DIY kits for the
coil clips. You have to assemble the clips and crimp the tiny pins onto the end of
the wires. Bought an AMP-TYCO crimping tool from China and it does an awesome
job of crimping the wire and the silicone seals at the same time. I was a bit
aprehensive to start, but soon got the hang of it :)

Image

Ran a new power supply for the COP's via a relay controlled by the ECU. Coils only
get power if the fuel pump is running for safety reasons. Fresh grounds to the
engine block and ready to fire it up... but discovered a screw up with my wiring
for the relay control that needed sorting. But once that was done I hit the key...
BAM...fired right up and ran like nothing had changed :)

Have to put a bunch of stuff back together before going for a drive to see if there
is any difference. I don't know of any reason why full sequential should perform
any different from wasted spark, but since the ECU can drive four ignition outputs
it seemed like a good opportunity to make the change.

UPDATE 22-12-18 Super pleased with the performance of the ignition upgrade. Car
runs real strong in 3rd and 4th and pulls from as low as 1500rpm if I feed the gas
in gently. Wish I had figured out I needed this 12 months ago... would have saved
me a heap of time chasing ghosts !!!

Also was given a set of these by someone who had changed injectors...

Image

They have hardly been used and RC's were a popular upgrade injector back in the day.
High impedance (saturated) RC SL9-550 and look to be a straight drop-in install on a
4AGE, so I'm gonna give them a try. Got some EV1 to DENSO adapter pigtails that will
let me plug the RC's into my existing injector harness with no cutting or splicing. That
way if they don't work out I can easily swap back to the DENSO's. If they work well then
I will get some new EV-1 clips and crimp them onto my harness for a permanent install.

I need a bit more headroom as I am hitting over 90% injector duty cycle on the 440's
and I'd like to stay under 80% duty cycle to avoid any lean out issues.

UPDATE 22-12-18 Been driving on the RC injectors for a few weeks now and despite
some teething problems, they are working good now. Car is smooth and responsive and
starts first time. It's gonna take me a while to get the new tune worked up, but the signs
are good :)

Got tired of the racket my exhaust was making after all the stuffing got blown
out of my Jap Apexi muffler. So I ordered a new "built to order" full stainless
muffler from a local manufacturer...

Image

It's an 8 x 5 oval shell with a straight thru 2-1/2" louvered tube and triple layer
sound insulation (stainless wool around the tube, high temp fiberglass mat then
fiberglass wool against the wrapper). Had to get the 3" tip for the "big engine"
look 8-) Kind of expensive but the makers offer a "guaranteed for life"warranty
and I am over replacing cheap mufflers every few years.

Nice sound... quiet when I am running around the suburb, but adequately loud
when I get on it and a nice sizzle at high rpm. I'm loving it :)

Went out to play today... unfortunately it rained from beginning to end. But the
show went on and some fun was had :) https://youtu.be/oeJsEtoF2Pw

We got four timed runs and although I was very tentative (first time I have driven
the car in the rain) I did manage to drop my times by about two seconds per run.

Nah... that was just on the day. This is the first time that the event has been run
up the hill for about 30 years. Last year it was shorter, started from the other end
and was dry. This year longer, better and wet, so no comparison between times.
But hopefully next year will be fine and times will be a lot better 8-)

Had to drive with the windows up because of the rain. With them down it is a bit
louder. I have another event on the 24th of March which might give a better idea.
I actually think that I need to replace my existing "hot dog" resonator with a proper
glass packed reso and I can get one in the same 8 x 5 size and triple layer stainless
construction. That will be on the cards as the existing reso was cracked and had to
be welded up when the muffler was fitted. It's only a matter of time.

Last Sunday was the day for the annual running of the Alexandra Road Hillclimb on
Mount Victoria, Wellington. The weather was damn near ideal with a bit of cloud to
protect from the sun and a small breeze for cooling. I only have a single layer driving
suit and I have to wear fire resistant underwear that covers everything from the
wrists to the ankles... wool in my case. You better believe that gets warm !!!

Made a movie of the up and down... https://youtu.be/XaxskqBrDq0

At the end of one of the short straights going up you will see some tire marks where
one guy launched his car down a bank. But other than that the day was trouble free.
The organizers provided pizza to go with a couple of beers while waiting for the prize
giving, and I caught up with a a few old friends. Grassroots motorsport for the win :)

Stole this clip from someone elses video of the hillclimb event.

https://youtu.be/MwbCPpCMKKE <<<<=== CLIP

I like it because it shows how motorsport can still be enjoyed regardless of
what kind of car you drive. Here is my 35 year old car following a 50 year old
Mark One Ford Escort and a 55 year old Mark One Ford Cortina. The last two
cars are fully built big dollar race cars... V8 engines, sequential boxes etc.

Crank the sound up and enjoy :)

sooo cool to see those old school rides in motoion... especially the cortina
both fords sound like raspy 4cyl-ish.... which v8, small displacement ? The R32? after you sounds like a V8

Yeah the R32 Skyline has a quad cam VK56 V8 and locally made TT Industries 5-speed
sequential box. Normally aspirated engine and puts around 580hp to the ground. The other
car is a series 6 RX7 with a 1UZFE and R154 5 speed box. Normally aspirated engine with
cams and ITB's. I don't know what kind of power it makes but it runs the same times as
the Nissan so I'd guess around the same power.

I notice that my car sounds a bit slower into the corner, but I run most of the hill in third.
Going down to second there just means two extra gear changes for no real gain in time.

This was my second attempt at this hillclimb, and the weather was perfect...

Image

Full field of 55 cars ranging from factory stock to dedicated racecars. And if you
are into stealth, let me tell you that a showroom stock Focus RS with sticky tires
doesn't sound quick, but is wicked fast (350 hp, 350 lb-ft of torque and 0-60 mph
in 4.7-seconds). Not bad for an innocuous looking 4-door family hatch !!!!

Video here... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXXmpJ7-ZRc

I've come to the conclusion that a 35 year old Corolla in full road trim with a few
modifications is never going to be as fast as a stripped out racecar. I'd need to be
lower, lighter, with better tires and more power. So be it... I didn't set out to build
a racecar, and if I did, I would start with a later model chassis with better suspension.
Doesn't mean that you can't have fun with an old car though. Just look at some of
the cars in the above pic... not exactly big dollar builds :)

Saw some signs of carbon tracking when I was changing plugs, so went looking for
a set of replacement rubber tips for the OEM 1NZ coils I'm using. Turns out they are
not stocked by anyone in NZ and the local Toyota dealership wants $26 each for them.
So I had a look to see what was available from China and ended up ordering a set of
these brand new 1NZ coils...

Image

Cost $86 for a set of four delivered to my door. New OEM Denso coils from Toyota are
$146 each !!! I figure that they should be at least as good as the 15 year old second
hand OEM coils I am using now. The rubber tips will be free of any traces of carbon,
and the fact that someone in Germany likes them enough to market them makes me
think that the quality should be OK.

EDIT: Been using these coils for a couple of months and they work fine. I've run them
up to 8000rpm quite a few times and they have never missed a beat.

When I changed the lower control arms on my car the attachment point for the tension
rods moved out a bit and that pulled the LCA's forward. So rather than fiddle with the
staked nuts on the tension rods I used a couple of 3mm washers for adjustment...

Image

With two washers the caster measured around 4 degrees which was super stable on the
highway but made the steering kind of heavy. So I put another 3mm washer in there
and did a bit of DIY toe adjustment. Now the steering is lighter and the car is a little
more twitchy on the road. I think it is about right, but when I have a chance I will get
another alignment and see what caster I actually have.

So there you have it... 20V starters are reduction type. The gears down the speed
and up the torque so that the starter motor can be smaller, and the whole thing lighter
than the old style starters without reduction gears. This starter is Toyota # 28100-15190
and the bolts centres will not allow this to bolt to a T-50 bellhousing.

I was looking at starters and this caught my eye. You think it's possible to bolt these 20v starter parts on the the flange that works with the T50 transmission?

I'm not sure about swapping flanges. You should be able to use your AE86 starter,
and probably the starter from any 16V 4AGE or 4AFE including the FWD models.
I used the AE92 reduction starter with a T50 and apparently, the starter from an
AE93 (whatever that is?) will work as well.

Try and get a starter with the solenoid on top when installed, and with a heat
shield on the side towards the headers. 16V headers will bolt up to a 20V once you
modify (slot) the holes at either end of the header flange.

Nice. I have an AE86/MR2 starter but I heard the 20v one is lighter thus why I'm trying to get that working if I could.

It all depends on how rough you are prepared to be :) Here are a couple of pics
showing a stock AE86 cast iron exhaust manifold bolted to a 20V.

Image

The righthand end is slotted down and the lefthand end may not be slotted at all.
Clamping is achieved by using a couple of sturdy washers. This is ROUGH... the
kind of thing I would do when I was a kid :) With a steel header flange it is more
professional to cut the "ears" off the flange and weld tags either end. Grind the
sealing face flat and drill new holes, then trim the tag into shape with the grinder.

Had a chance to give the car a run on Sunday and thankfully we got thru the day
without any rain. Had no problems. Could get around the corners a bit faster if I had
tires with more grip, but a set of sticky tires cost around NZ$1200. And for the few
times I would use them before they went hard, it's not worth the outlay.

Video here... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gZrEc5 ... e=youtu.be

And a pic lifted from fb...

Image

Had to run as #98 as someone else beat me to my usual #86. That was another guy
with an AE86, but as it happens he didn't show on the day. Just as well I have a number
that can be turned upside down :)

Ever since I deleted the A/C (after the compressor crapped out) I have been
meaning to get hold of one of these....

Image

Image

Came out of a JDM non-A/C AE85 car and is identical to the A/C panel in my
car except it does not have the two A/C buttons at the RH end of the panel.
Looks like it might be a bit of a hassle to install so I shall just put it aside
until I have some other reason to go inside the dash :)

be VERY careful when you do go in behind the dash... the cable mount clips are easy to lose, as well as break. Be careful with them.

Btw, do you have the difficult to move temp slide? If you do, there is(was) an odd routing clip that can cause the blend door cable to bind inside its own sheath. The binding cable can actually get so bad that it breaks the heater control assembly......

Postby jondee86 » Tue Nov 26, 2019 7:03 pm

After 34 years of always having an AE86 in the garage, I am done with paying homage
to the last and the best of the RWD Corollas. For me there is no further development
possible on this car... it now has everything I ever wanted in a road driven AE86 and it
has reached the endpoint that I dreamed about when I bought this car 20 years ago.

Working on this car has taught me to have patience. And I also learned how to design
and make custom parts when what I wanted was not available for sale. I learned how to
build a engine wiring harness from scratch, how to program an ECU well enough to have
an engine that runs pretty decent, why twinscrew superchargers are the sh*t and a whole
bunch of other stuff. And I learned about how to fix things on an old car.

Now I am moving on... I want tiptronic, big brakes, proper suspension.. a radio !!! So
the AE86 is off to Australia and I have a new toy in the garage... something completely
different. One era ends and another begins :)

Cheers... jondee86

Well, it was time for a change and I had my heart set on one of these...

Image

Only available in 4-door but 5000cc V8, 416hp @ 6600rpm and 371ft.lb @ 5200rpm.

Then I found that for little more than 1/3 of the price of the ISF I could get one of these...

Image

Available as a coupe with a 3000cc inline 6 twin turbo with 300hp @ 5800rpm and
300ft.lb @ 1500rpm !!! Both are 2008 models and the BMW is way cheaper than
the Lexus so a no-brainer when buying a weekend toy. Would have loved to buy the
ISF as the engine is superb. Only drawback is that it is so highly developed that making
more power costs a lot for little gain. On the other hand you can buy (and I have bought)
downloadable tunes from MHD to reprogram the ECU via the OB@ port. Too easy :)

If you want you can buy a few bolt-on tuner parts and get to 400hp/450torque without
really straining. Add that to proper suspension, big brakes, a 6-speed auto trans with
tiptronic, and you are about as far from an AE86 as you can get.

hate to see your AE go.... after all that effort. Hope the new owner carrys on, & report here.
love the style of those particular 2dr BMs.... the station wagon even more. They have some issues tho - youtube. BMWs in general

I'd think u could build comparable turbo AE to your liking(sans tiptronic) for a fraction of the cost
