Hey guys, been a long time member but havent had anything in a while that really fit this forum for a build thread. until now. woohoo
Got 2 builds going on cuz I like to make everything difficult for myself.
1st the Grocery Getter - 1987 Toyota Tercel Wagon 4wd
This car start out life actually from a fwd tercel wagon that I acquired with a fwd 4age swap done by another member. At the time I got the car I was under the impression a rwd conversion would be pretty easy until I did some research. This lead me to look for a project tercel to swap and convert to rwd. I found the prefect candidate in a 87 4wd tercel in Mcminnville with a jdm 3ac-scv swap but the owner had also swapped in a 83 trans/transfer case while leaving the 87 rear end on causing the trans to grenade. The plan would be to pull the 3ac from the 4wd tercel and put it in the fwd tercel and then convert the 4wd tercel to rwd with the 4age.
Porject Fleet:
Left to Right: Green 86 4age Tercel (Turdcel - 4age swapped) - AllTrac Camry (Eventually will be swapped) - White 87 4wd Tercel
3ac in 4wd wagon
4age in FWD wagon
2nd the Weekend Warrior - 1984 Toyota Corolla DX
My friend bought this car as running swap to put into his car and sold me the shell.
The plan is to make a dedicated track car out of it, still debating on eventual motor, I want something that is going to make 300+ hp while keeping it 4cyl toyota. options pretty much come down to 3sgte, 3rz, or a 2ar, but motor is not important right now as there is a lot of other work to be done to prep the car for track use.
Friends hatch that we swapped the motor into.

Loving that wagon
And that hatch looks like it has a build thread here too?

always liked the idea of 4AGE in one of those tercel wagons.
It looks like its rwd. but that transaxle though lol

It might i'll have to ask him if he has a build thread here.
Thanks guys the wagon should be an interesting project.
a while back I was screwing around with the fwd wagon before I sold the shell and 3ac to my friend.
Got the motors out
3ac pulled out:
4age pulled out:
FWD Trans is out:
Good some goodies for the wagon.
Fender mirrors, fogs, manual rack
AND some ITBs!
Quick mock up looks great!

Re: Grocery Getter & Weekend Warrior
started tearing down the block to clean it up and found all this garbage.
marred crank key! eww no thanks!
guess the water pump pipe didnt fit to well?
pulled the head and something had fallen into piston #4 and #2 was a bit shaky.
Time to source a new block, went to the junkyard and found this.

Got a 4agze CAS to replace the distributor.
Compared the T50 to the 4wd trans, luckily enough everything fit up nicely.
driveshaft has the same splines and trans mounts will fall in the same place! Woohoo.
The head isnt really ready to go on, but I just wanted to see!
Slowly coming together!

Re: Grocery Getter & Weekend Warrior
The cars themselves havent made much progress as I've been working on motor stuff.
With the head off you can see it was super dirty and I felt needed some rework.
Valves had some carbon build up on them.
Turns out the head did need a ton of work, head was warped and needed resurface, it had 2 bent valves, on the flip side we found it someone had did some port work on the intake side, it got new valve seals and it had bigport cams!
Im curious your guys thought on that, small port head big port cams. have you seen a power gain or better power curve?
Anyways on to pics of the refreshed head!
Now we wait for the 7a block to get cleaned up at the machine shop.

Very nice!
I've always wondered how a smallport head would perform with bigport cams. Seems like it would be a good and cheap little gain in power. Bigport cams offer 240 degrees duration with 7.56mm lift, where as smallport cams have only 232 and 7.1mm

Re: Grocery Getter & Weekend Warrior
Some update on the Corolla.
Poor things just hangs out on the side of my house for now, until I can get it rolling again.
Current goals for this are to get it all stripped down to prep it for a cage and get 5lug on the front end.
Stripping process.
5lug conversion process: I opted to use mx83 front suspension parts to get 5lug, and so far Im pretty happy with the results.
mx83 vs ae86 control arms.
I had to open up the bolt holes on the crossmember just a little bit to accept the larger x8 bolts.
But the gain is 33mm over stock. (not bad for $40)
The x8 control arms had to be drilled out to accept ae86 tension rods bolt pattern and size.
The upper larger holes are x8, the lower smaller holes are 86.
Crossmember back in
suspension nearly bolted back up.
5lug on! I just had to swap the 86 top hat on the x8 strut to make it work.
This was all just a test to see if x8 would work fairly easily on 86 and sure enough this was pretty successful IMO.
Eventually the plan will be to swap all the OEM parts with decent aftermarket x8 parts (x8 coils, adjustable LCA, brake upgrade, etc) but this is a great start!

Re: Grocery Getter & Weekend Warrior
Some engine progress finally.
Got the 7a block back from the machine shop all nice and cleaned up! Cylinders hone, block decked crank polished and everything spec'ed out.
Ended up going with stock 7a rods and bigport 4a pistons using press fit wrist pins, shooting for a 10.5-10.7:1 compression. Block was decked so the pistons had zero deck height. Got bearings on order from toyota and once they are in I can then start the reassembly process. so for now on to a few pics!
On the block I found what looked like weird casting flaws, I tried to remove the excess material but it does not want to come off.
and of course I found it where I would least want it.
7a rods + 4a BP pistons assembled with press fit wrist pins.
And this is what happens when you let your kids pic paint colors at the store. Haha
