The car is not running at the time of this post, so I can not say how they compare in the Corolla. However, the Celica it came from was very fun. I have read tons of (no offense) BS threads and posts with people condemning the 22RE to hell. I can't prove it (hypocrite? lol) but they seem like they are arm chair racers. "It's a truck engine / it doesn't rev high / it's heavy / etc" ...whatever. I can PERSONALLY say that that engine is great for drifting, doughnuts, burnouts, passing on the freeway, etc. Take into account this was in a Celica. It's pretty safe to say in the lighter Corolla things will only be better. please don't confuse my words. I'm not saying it's a better engine than the wide variaty of A block engines, everything has it's pros and cons. It comes down to personal preference. My daily is a GS400, so torque is a close friend to me. ;)

yellowsnow4free wrote:Also, what transmission mount did you use?

Automatic AE86 crossmember with W58 rubber mount. Also note the front half of the automatic AE86 driveshaft fits, yet the manual one does not. Don't throw away those automatic parts!

powered_by_toyota wrote:...custom mounts?

Currently? One OE AE86 mount on the passenger side, and two RA64 (Celica) mounts on the driver side. It's a bit off center, so I'll continue to change the setup around until it's perfect.

The main goal was to have a 22RE/W58 installed and mounted in an AE86 for ZERO dollars. Mainly because everyone says it can't be done without custom this and that, and the fact that "it's not worth the time". Good motivation for me. I have not spent one penny on this swap so far. I figure the transitive property (remember high school algebra?) has helped us use other toyota parts in our cars before, why not exploit it to the fullest. Say and think what you want, but most of us are cheap. Swap kits and custom brackets are great and all, but they're not flying off the shelves for a reason.

That being said, I do realize that it's about 96% feasible with factory parts. I'm almost certain that some form of spacer will be needed to make it perfect. Spacer as in, you could use washers. I'm not promoting half-ass, or unsafe work. I just realize that people will ask and try for themselves anyways. On the contrary, when all is said and done, I would like to have five sets of proper spacers made with water jet cut steel or aluminum. Either to keep for future endeavors or to sell them here/eBay.

You laugh, I ponder. One day I might just do it. See the SC14 blower too? lol :o That shifter worked great in the wagon by the way, thanks.

I, too have a 22RE that I want to put in a corolla. 2-valves per cylinder, but I've always been amazed how robust this engine is. definately a back-burner project and the 22RE needs a rebuild, so double back-burner. the ability to easily install a W-58 with stock parts behind the 22RE is also a very tempting proposition.

Today I received my AGX shocks, brembo rotors, and SS brake lines from 88Rotors. I also picked up new wheel bearings, seals, synthetic grease, brake and clutch master cylinders, clutch slave, SS clutch line, brake pads, hardware, and ball joints. Thinking about rebuilding the calipers while I'm at it.

New timing cover and chain kit? nice.

how much did those cost with the water & oil pump? metal guides? what brand (ebay special?)? I bet that even the ebay special will last for years and years.

I bought the parts from a reputable "22R" shop called EngnBldr, they are up in Oregon. The prices are just as good if not better than "eBay brand" kits, and the quality is better. The timing cover, water pump, oil pump, timing chain kit, and cam came to $311 shipped. I did purchase the HD chain kit, what it really needed. Long story short; the engine is missing the driver side plastic guide. It's also the reason why the Celica was $360. I did however drive the car 40 miles without the tensioner. 22RE, lol.

Here are the cam specs.
Image
This cam was only $117 shipped! http://www.engnbldr.com/ There isn't a fancy shopping cart or anything. It's more or less like buying parts via car forum. Send money, put what you want in the description, sit and wait.

T3 front spring perch and manual rack bushing came in today. Still waiting for the bushing kit. The strut bar clears with about 3/4" of the intake manifold.

Complete Prothane (via T3) came in today. I would have more updates and progress with the car, but I've had the death flu sickness. All these parts and I can't put them on. :/

The only cutting and/or hammering I had to do was the power steering nipples on the rack. I'm sure if I took my time I could have cleared it, but I was in a rush that night. You can source different shifters to clear the hole in the trans tunnel. Everything so far has been done with hand tools and will power. No custom brackets or adapters. That being said I'm having a one piece driveshaft made because the old Toyota half sections I've been mismatching are all old and worn out. As for engine mounts, I spaced the brackets and used AE86 mounts.

Sorry for the lack of updates, but I've had a lot of backwards progress. My house was broken into. All of my tools and 90% of the parts that weren't installed were stolen. The chassis' and engines are still there thankfully. I' hoping to have this car back together and entered in JSSC this year.

You mean a w58 fits right in no hammering to get that bad boy in?!?

And yes a W58 will fit in the tunnel, with some room to spare.

The whole darn thing-you sir are my hero.
I really love my 86, and I don't want to have to cut it to make it awesome!

I'm planning on going Puerto Rican with it and rocking the 3TC turbo carb.

Also bought a 270 cam with 11mm of lift and LCE Performance dual springs with titanium retainers. I might vulture the rest of the Celica and swap over the rear end and front suspension/brakes.

looks great nix. did you use the stock 22re engine brackets and drill a hole for the offset dowel on the 4ag rubber mounts? that's how i envisioned it would work. The bolt hole in the 22re engine bracket is the same size as the mounting point on the rubber mount (either M12 or M14). the only difference is that the 22re mount has a dowel in a different place than the 4a mount.

Reminds me of the 3 *E86 with these R engines in them, one even has the stock slushbox stillattached to it. That combo came out of an RX80. All 3 with sidedraughts. These engines don't have anything over 5k rpms with stock cams but with such light SR trim chassises, the cars will slide very well.

Turtle - I've made 5 different combinations work for the engine mounts. I haven't decide on which to keep.

Attached the side skirts. The awesome V-Fiber sides are a good inch short. They are cut for now, fiberglass work to follow in the future.

The radiator came in. I have to trim some of engine bay, but it fits nicely. The fan shroud looks great, but won't fit with the fans. The 22RE is a big girl.

Image

Also received my Fineline Tuning Rocket bunny style wing. The fitment is amazing! Pictures as soon as it's mounted.
