Celica ST 1991 rebuild + 4AGE swap
Hi everyone, this is my little project of my Celi, that I bought several years ago as my daily car. It wasn´t in good shape really, so I started to fix it almost immediately Here are some pix I took over few years during the rebuild...hope you´ll enjoy

Brakes update
I threw away the original brakes and got the stock ones from ST185, which are slightly bigger. Also converted to 5-stud hubs and disks at the rear.

Re: Celica ST 1991 rebuild + 4AGE swap
be patient, I´ll get to it There is still 4AFE inside however. Here is a random photo I found...
The 4AGE is almost ready, just waiting for some bits. I´m expecting to put it in during january. I ´ll post next photos from machine shop soon..
Time to replace worn out suspension bushes with new PUR ones from Prothane. All arms and other parts were sanded, zinc coated and painted.

Nice build, man. Keep up the updates!
There shouldn't be a day that goes by where you don't learn something new.
Re: Celica ST 1991 rebuild + 4AGE swap
The 4AGE story...
Got an early 3-rib Bluetop with unknown km from a junk AE82. It was an european version with MAP sensor and 10:1 pistons with stock power around 125 HP(?is that right??). It was pretty dirty, though...At first I wanted to simply rebuild the engine and remain it within the stock spec, but the plan has changed... I decided to push it further in 170+ hp area.
Stock Bluetop as I bought it
Short block assembly...The 4AFE engine in Celica has stronger 7-rib bare block, so we used it instead. We applied glyptal inside of the block, which makes the surface smooth and allow faster oil return to the pan.
Early bluetop crankshaft before we sent it to be machined and ballanced
Wiseco hicomp pistons, bore 81.50. They needed to be machined to the same weight, cuz they were off over 5 grams from the lightest to the heaviest.
Custom Molnar 40/20 H-beam rods to match the early 40mm rod journal crankshaft with 20mm pin pistons.
Custom billet steel ladder bars to reinforce the main caps

Wow, great work. I like how you're cleaning up every part you take off or replace.
Is zinc coating expensive?
Is zinc coating expensive?
Re: Celica ST 1991 rebuild + 4AGE swap
Thanks for all the positive comments guys
It´s quite cheap actually. It depends on the weight of the parts you put in the bath. I paid around 50 bucks for everything in the post above.

Re: Celica ST 1991 rebuild + 4AGE swap
hey floyd i have a 92 st and i am about to do this same project basically. i have been told that the 4afe has a crank drilled oil spot at 90 degrees and it cannot hold over 150hp safely...have you had any problems since you took it to about 170hp?
Re: Celica ST 1991 rebuild + 4AGE swap
engine isn´t finished yet. Still waiting for head assembly, hopefully next week... There is early 4AGE crankshaft inside 4AFE block,(they are all the same, as it is still 4A), so I don´t expect any issues here.

Love the engine porn, keep it coming
Re: Celica ST 1991 rebuild + 4AGE swap
ok cool thanks floyd for the response. im changing mine up from yours just a bit tho because im planning on turboing mine next year. so im getting 193t cams, acl race, main and rod bearings, aem ems4 ecu,(im getting new crankshaft ladders and rods just not sure what yet) custom low compression pistons, complete multi layer steel rebuild kit smallport 4age head, rebuilding the c52 transmission with stage2 clutch..and ive already put in a tmw short throw shifter, st suspension rear sway bar, 16 inch motegi rims 205/55/16 fuzion tires, polyurethane bushings, and about to do megan racing coilovers, and new tie rods control arms and trailing arms. then getting the minor body problems fixed and painting it. then getting racing seats eventually with a carbon dipped dash, door panels and center console. hopefully it will all be done in a few years..lol
Re: Celica ST 1991 rebuild + 4AGE swap
Looks great, really like the color you picked.
Re: Celica ST 1991 rebuild + 4AGE swap
I'm sure if you're aware, but the ARP stud on the exhaust side, number 1, will interfere with the stock distributor in the head. The ARP stud is longer than the OEM headbolts and will catch on the end of the distributor shaft. Be cautious about that and take appropriate measures.

You´re right, thank you for reminding me Distributor shaft has to be slightly modified to clear the ARP head stud. However, I´m going to use distributor with stock ecu just for brake in time. After that I´ll switch to DLI setup with coils and fully programmable stand alone ecu with agressive map. I´ve got Master Ignition from IMF Soft. http://imfsoft.com/en/hardware/zapalova ... i-cdi-v8-0

If I can help another member to avoid chewing up an exhaust cam and/or destroying a distributor, then I'm glad to help.
That Master Ignition system looks intriguing. I'm going to spend some time looking over that.
And BTW, love what you've done with your Celica and I'm very excited to see your build progress. Keep up the good work!
