Have a read here for a start...
http://www.billzilla.org/4agmods.htm

Some of the information is getting a bit old, but it will give you an idea
of what you need to do to get to various levels of performance. These days
adding a turbo is also a popular way of making good power without having
to get involved with a lot of machine work on the engine.

These guys are very helpful with turbo projects...

Once you have done a bit of reading you will have a better idea of what
is possible, and can start to make some decisions on where you would like
to go with your engine build; how much work you will be able to do yourself,
and how much you want to spend !!

Cheers... jondee86

Heyah, offroadcrazy. Welcome to the forum!

First off, what kind of build are you wanting to do?

What kind of use will the car see?

How much money and time are you willing to put into this build?

If you could post all of the answers for these questions in this thread, some of the other members could get you going a bit quicker. :)

Once again, welcome to the forum! :D

I say, drive the piss out of what you have now. You just might find that the car is a lot of fun the way it came from Toyota.

Definitely take the Billzilla page with a grain of salt. It's so outdated I almost think it does more harm than good but there is good information sprinkled in there as well.
The good thing about the 4AGE is that it's well balanced from the factory. This means that there aren't any secret easy fixes to unleash a lot of power. The intake is pretty goood, the exhaust is pretty good. You could throw a grand at these external mods and not be impressed with the gains. The real gain to be had is in the motor it's self and there is no easy way to do this. You could throw a little boost at the motor in it's stock form. This would cost a couple grand. Probably a couple more to get it to make real impressive numbers.
To stay NA you could gain a little with some cams but the compression is already pathetically low and more cam want's more compression. If you don't you will loose a little down low and not make nearly as much as you could up high.
Now high compression pistons themselves aren't that much but at this point you are basically all in for a full motor rebuild so again you are looking at a couple grand to do. A basic build like this will gain you about 50% in power. More if the motor is tired. At this point you are getting near the practical limits of an NA 4A. If you want more than 150 WHP I would suggest more displacement and or boost unless restricted by a class of racing.

It's hard to say because a little money means different things to different people but it sounds like the above options are out of the budget.
In which case I would focus on the basic tuneup stuff and get the motor running in top condition. Go through the suspension and all the other ares of the car and make sure everything is tight and healthy. Other than that start saving your money.

One option is to pick up the healthiest 7 rib motor you can find and start building that on the side as you have time and money. Once it's finished just swap them out.

300-400 hp in a short wheel base car.. hmm. IDK if thats a good idea, unless you have a ton of money and large cojones.

My advice(take with a grain of salt) would be to keep the 4age, with some mild bolt ons and some suspension mods with LSD, and you could embarrass some cars that are in the 3-400 hp power range.

I'd go with a turbo like Yoshi says. If you don't want to, swap it. If you don't want to do that, sell the car. Good luck.

some one was told me i should do a 7age motor build if I'm going to turbo it.
is there any benefit with a 7age over the 4age?

That and it will help the turbo spool a little quicker. It's by no means necessary. 4AGTE can be bad ass but there are some advantages of stepping up to the 7A.

If you are interested in building one on the side, I got a 7rib bigport collecting dust. no header, intake, or fuel. I would recommend new pistons and a bore on it. Like I said, if you want it, make me an offer for it, shipping would probably be around $250.

Good luck with you 86, and don't forget to have fun :D
