Dying Issue mid corner HELP PLEASE

Postby truenocoupe916 » Sun May 31, 2015 9:40 pm

So this has only happened once and it was literally 15min ago but I'm kind of freaking out so any and all insight is highly appreciated. This was my 85 sr5 coupe 170k original.

So as I approached a left hand turn the light turned yellow and I sped up. Going about 35-40mph I executed the turn and without ebrake or clutch kicking I just let my rear end kick out and counter steered (a move I do fairly often to escape city traffic). As my rear end slid the car kind of bogged down and felt as if it had no power so I down shifted and still no go. I attempted to floor it which seemed to bog the engine down even more and wouldn't go even in 1st. So I shut her down and fired her back up instantaneously (which she did 1st try). She ran as well as shifted smooth the last 5 miles home.

Could this be a bad cell in my battery possibly? Could it have anything to do with me having an eighth of a tank and hitting a corner to fast? Or maybe a faulty fuel pump or alternator?

So she acted weird as the counter steer was initiated and the rear end started to kick out, had no power in any gear, and then instantly restarted without a hiccup. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE somebody out there give me some info! I don't want to drive her and worsen anything that could possibly be going wrong. DM or post reply ANY insight please I'm freaking out haha

Does sound a lot like you were low on fuel and the pump sucked up
some air. The SR5 has a mechanical pump mounted on the side of the
head. It draws (sucks) gas from the tank, and if for some reason the
fuel pickup inside the tank gets uncovered while the car is running,
the pump will suck air into the fuel line.

Driving downhill or rounding a curve can shift the gas away from the
pickup... maybe this happened to you ? But the fact that the car started
up and drove normally on the way home says there can't be anything
seriously wrong. Try keeping the tank above 1/4 full :)

Hey Trueno Coupe,

Your fuel pump should be fine, like Jondee said, keep that tank filled! Sr5 and zenki gts tanks don't have Baffling. Baffling is like a small bowl surrounding your fuel pickup inside the tank. This insures that the last drops of fuel are right where they need to be as opposed to sloshing around the tank

Thank you also saiGone! So if I were to change it are the kouki gts fuel pumps the way to go? And will it fit into the spot I take my sr5 pump out of?

Even if you only change the pump you could still have the same issue it has to do with the actual shape of the gas tank where the pick up sits, that's the baffling saigone was talking about.

Talking about two different kinds of pumps here. The SR5 has the mechanical pump
mounted on the engine, and the GTS has an electrical pump mounted inside the gas
tank. Different pipework from front to back and the GTS pump is a high pressure
pump, so not suitable for use with a carb without a lot of trickery.

At this stage much easier to keep a bit more gas in the tank.

Jondee86 ify sr5 fuel pump is located in the engine bay what are the 3 screws in my trunk over my gas holding up? I assumed that would be my fuel filter seeing as it is right abovey gas tank

Most likely the gas gauge sending unit/float

Carburated?
The float bowl has more then enough gas to get around a corner, and with the fuel line it has enough in it to get past the next block.
Running out of fuel is a sputtering, coughing, surging affair, you've got some other problem, not that.

True ^^^^ that. If the engine fired up without a bit of cranking to get
fuel back into the carb, it could be an electrical problem. Make sure
everything electrical is secure... dissy, coil, battery etc. Look for any
wires or accessories that could swing to the right if you turned left (or
the other way, depending on which way that corner went).

As said, running out of gas is more of a gradual loss of power with
coughing, farting and bucking. Losing power suddenly and completely
like someone switched the key off, if more likely to be electrical.
